Last night, the United States Senate rejected a proposed rules change that would have allowed for the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, to advance with a simple majority of 51 votes (as opposed to the arcane Senate filibuster rule, which requires a 60 vote “supermajority” to pass certain — but not all —pieces of legislation).
But two Democratic senators, Joe Manchin from West Virginia, and Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona, joined all 50 Senate Republicans in opposition of that rules change. It failed by a vote of 52-48.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, which, if passed, would have overhauled election laws and enabled Congress to counter an onslaught of new and extreme voting restrictions enacted by Republican-controlled state around the the country.
The key takeaway that every American who cares about their constitutionally guaranteed rights to vote in free and fair elections should remember is this.
Not one Republican senator in the United States Senate, and not one Republican representative in the United States House of Representatives voted in favor of ensuring and protecting the rights of every American citizen to vote in free and fair elections.
Not a single Republican member of the U.S. Congress! It makes me see red!

I am seeing red with you, Fandango. I have been fighting for that John Lewis Act. I have been emailing and calling. No one listens to us because they do not care about the American people…only their own pockets and own agendas. We’re screwed. Pretty soon the Constitution will not even be worth the paper it was written on. Real talk.

I think since Hilary Clinton called our Constitution and Bill of Rights outdated, that the GOP has taken that as an agenda to rid us of our rights. We have gone backwards at least 300 years since Obama left the White House.

Yeah it was alarming then and everything just keeps going downhill on our civil rights. I think they forget that they work for us. It’s really getting scary. Keep an eye on this incident in the Ukraine too. I just get really bad vibes. Cuba is coming back in the news with “Havana Syndrome” at the same time Putin is lining forces at Ukraine.

I’m very suspicious about what’s going on in The Ukraine, too. (And Biden spoke strangely about it, yesterday afternoon.)
I have a feeling our goose was cooked on 9/11 (and not because of people in Afghanistan) — or in January of 2001 (or when that 2000 election, leading to George W. [the lesser’s] inauguration, went sideways).

Thanks for sharing that link with me, Marleen. It addresses a lot that is still going on today like the eavesdropping on domestic channels, and the lack of checks and balances. What a mess. I don’t know what is going to happen, but I am just scared as a human being. As an activist, I am pissed off.

Follow up: Foreign correspondent Richard Engel (from Kyiv) on Nicolle Wallace’s “Deadline White House” said, tonight: So there’s confusion among the Ukrainian people; they don’t exactly understand why President Biden, who has been in government for so long, would reveal so many cards. A lot of people here were taken aback. Why would he appear to give a green light to Vladimir Putin to launch a limited military invasion? That’s the way they saw the comments which were … clarified by the White House, last night, and then clarified by Biden himself in that clip [from today]. [They’re] not just confused, they’re annoyed. …. (And so on.)
Zelensky: We want to remind you the great powers that there are no minor incursions and small nations just as there are no minor casualties and little grief from the loss of loved ones. I say this as the president of a great power.

And I’m ready to vote for Klobuchar for President. I don’t think she would’ve been so naïve (if it’s that) for so long as Biden (who doesn’t, furrowed brows aside, actually show signs of waking up like Senator Maggy Hassan did last night). Manchin is not his friend (or is he)? But you’re right: the takeaway is that zero Republicans are honest about our Constitution (a simple majority being inscribed therein).
