For her weekly Blogging Insights prompts, Dr. Tanya provides us with a quote about blogging or writing and asks us to express our opinion about said quote.
This week’s quote is unattributed.
“You’ve got a new story to write and it looks nothing like your past.”
This sounds like it should be the motto of the United States Federal Witness Protection Program, also known as the Witness Security Program or WITSEC. The program is designed to protect threatened witnesses before, during, and after a trial.
Those participating in the program, who themselves are often criminals or criminal-adjacent, are given a new identity and are relocated to a different part of the country. The idea is the allow these witnesses to escape their sordid pasts and to start a new life.
Outside of WITSEC, while many might wish to start a new story that is nothing like their past, it’s unlikely. You can change your name and/or change your location, but you can’t change your past or who you are.
And yes, I admit that my answer has nothing to do with blogging or writing.
It is still an interesting post to read.

Sometimes we need to follow our train of thought along a winding road.

It would be so hard to leave family and friends behind… if my life depended on it I think I could do it, I really don’t know.

The WITSEC program relocates immediate family (spouse/kids) together with the witness. But not friends.

I would miss the sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins… maybe because I have a fairly small family it is easier to get along with everyone. Ha, ha!

No but it’s accurate, and to be honest I don’t really see how that question could have anything to do with writing/blogging, unless you’re writing about amnesia perhaps

I found out my cousin was in WITSEC with her two daughters to escape her ex-husband. I don’t think she wanted to let any of her intermediate family know lest she put us in danger if we helped her. It’s really helped her get out of a dangerous situation. She’s certainly in a different place in her life now thanks to this program.

I’m happy for her that she was able to start her new life with her daughters.
