E.M.’s Sunday Ramble Prompt — Pets

E.M. Kingston has started a new weekly prompt called The Sunday Ramble. It is based upon a certain topic. She asks five questions about that topic, that we can ramble on however we wish. Today’s topic is “pets.”

1. Do you have any pets? If you do, tell us about them (name, kind of pet, etc.)

I’ve had pets all of my life. Mostly dogs, but also some others, ranging from rabbits, snakes, turtles, and tropical fish. But for purposes of E.M.’s prompt, I’m going to focus on our two most recent pets, our dog and our cat, pictured below.

2. What nicknames do you call your pet(s)?

Our dog, Shadow, who we lost in November 2020 at age 15, was a black, mixed German shepherd and Labrador retriever. She was a rescue and the sweetest dog ever. Our cat, Colby, is still with us, but he’s almost 16, so he’s a senior citizen. He is a black cat with green eyes and was a stray who adopted us by hanging out on our front porch and refusing to leave until we gave him a proper home. In both cases, their names are what we called them.

3. Do your pet(s) like to travel with you in the car?

Shadow loved to travel by car and accompanied us on half a dozen cross country drives. Colby absolutely hates going in the car, which is why we use a vet that makes house calls.

4. If you had to imagine, who would your pet(s) be if they were human?

I don’t know that could name a specific person, but our dog was a lover and a people pleaser and if she had been human, she would have been a Democrat. Our cat is aloof and is the kind that has no qualms about biting or scratching the hand that feeds him, so he’d be a Republican.

5. What does your pet(s) do for you?

Our pets have always brought us companionship, warmth, comfort, and unconditional love.

Hi Fandango! Sorry to hear of the loss of your furbaby dog, Shadow. I’ve lost quite a few companions in my life. My biggest cry was losing Bella. She was a Staffordshire Bull. Neighbors poisoned her when I lived in Arkansas. Colby sounds like my outside cat, Inana. When I brought her home from the hospital where I worked, I put her in the car, and she was bouncing off the windows and on my head lol.

Thanks for sharing your pets with us and rambling with me! I hope you had a great Christmas!

That’s horrible, that the neighbors did that.

I did, although it was gray and rainy. I hope yours was nice, too.

It was rainy and gray here as well, but it was good. We got some good time together making food and such.

    Aren’t Republicans people pleasers?……..

You obviously drove Colby to the vet once damaging her psychologically forever about car transport…….

Funny about cats hanging around one’s doorstep. FCS cat Priscilla wandered in off the street, said hey this looks good…decided to stay. Wouldn’t be without her now. I’m not a doggie person but Ralph does have his moments…….

I do not have a dog but am seriously considering getting one. I’ve been looking at breeds, learning a little bit. I have a large yard with a pond/lake and a big unused tub inside the house. I could put up a fence. Where I currently reside, there is a lovely grey cat who hangs around in and around and under the deck. I’ve considered taking him/her in, but won’t.

Oh my goodness, Fandango. Number four brought out some deep analysis. What did you think of cats before you brought in the stray?

He was my first cat. I wasn’t much of a cat fan before we took him in, but I’ve grown to love cats…or at least one cat.

My cousin got a kitten from a rescue place a few months ago… so cute, and I hung out with him and the dog the kitty quickly warmed up to, . I took pictures of the dog, but I was disappointed I somehow forgot to take one of the cat. He is like a couple of cats I used to have, who I also got from a rescue, and were like Louis’s cat and Lois’s cat. Mine were outside cats. I have had an indoor cat, too.

          * And like Paula Light’s. I’m sure I haven’t remembered everyone with a black and white kitty.

They are as lucky to have you, as you were to have them. Pets being a fountain of unconditional love (even kitties with sharp claws)
