Share Your World — 12/6/2021

It’s the first Share Your World of December and that means 2021 is nearing its end. Looking back, I probably won’t miss it much. Anyway, let’s see what Melanie wants us to share this week.

What really turns your stomach? (Politicians aside.)

Yes, I know that Melanie said “politicians aside,” but what really turns my stomach has its roots in politics and it’s all of the people (mostly Republicans and far-right conservatives) who are bound and determined to destroy the American democracy, who refuse to get vaccinated and wear face masks to combat COVID, and who have no qualms about taking away women’s rights to manage their own health decisions.

What would YOU do with the immense amount of ‘garbage’ in the world, if there weren’t dumps or barges where it was taken to be processed?

What would I do? I’m just some grumpy old fart who complains about the problem but has no grand solutions to offer. Personally, I do my small part by recycling, composting, and minimizing what goes in my landfill trash bin. I also try to avoid purchasing products that are packaged in plastic and other non-sustainable packaging. I also purchase mostly organic foods. Do my actions do much to address the problem? Probably not, but it makes me feel better.

What’s the oddest container you’ve ever gotten a gift in?

Whoa, I guess I’ve lived a very sheltered life because I can’t think of any container of a gift I’ve ever received that I would describe as “odd.”

Holiday themed question:

Do people behave differently during Christmas (insert your own holiday or festive season)?
Do they try to be better?
Do you donate something (e.g., money, clothes) to charities?
Do you give something to homeless people?

No, no, and no. (Just call me Scrooge McFandango.)

This is an allegedly joyful time of year. How do you, personally, FEEL?

Continuing with the Scrooge McFandango theme, I’m looking forward to this “joyful time of year” being over.

Deck the halls with boughs of holly
Rudolph’s nose it is not red
    Santa lives in freezing cold
Don’t get up just stays in bed

Sorry to wreck your Christmas. It’s all in your head. But if it makes you feel good….

We used to give a lot when we had a lot more. Now, we have very little and I do what I can with the little money available. I’m okay with the holidays this year. We’ve made them very easy and un-stressful — AND we don’t buy big gifts.

You know, recycling works in places where they are serious about it. It doesn’t work here because we AREN’T serious. We have no factories to turn recyclables into usable materials, so recycling is just a way to make us feel like we’re doing something. On the other hand, if everyone would do their best, it WOULD make a difference. Most people don’t even try and that’s sad.

I’m not a Christmas person, it’s just another day as far as I’m concerned. I might clean the oven 😕

Thank you Fandango for a very truthful Share Your World. The garbage question (which might include that first one too you know…those sorts ARE garbage, pity there’s no dump to put them in, hmm?) raised this thought with me: You are doing something, and if everyone did their part (all small granted, and individually pretty slim pickings) but if EVERYBODY hopped aboard the train, we might make a small dent in a huge problem. I do fear it’s too late all the same and it won’t matter what happens to the garbage if we’re all extinct. Earth is the ultimate recycling plant in a way. My favorite part of Christmas is reading and watching “A Christmas Carol”. There’s a line in the book somewhere which I will muck up because quoting precisely ain’t my thang. This line shares the sentiment of Christmas is a time when the world (mankind) can be the better version of themselves for a short while. I agree fully that how things are now in our country at least, has erased that kind of thinking and replaced it with greed and avarice and ugly things. A lot of us are really depressed at this time of year (stretching back to October) and it’s not a wonder that suicides are at their highest point during the “holidays”. I’ve experienced (continue to experience) a shocking lack of Christmas spirit this year. I don’t see the point. That’s why I ask such silly questions because I have to LOOK for the feeling and find it where I can. It’s not automatic. My husband had your views about the holidays too. Also, I wouldn’t presume to tell anyone how they MUST feel, I’ll leave that up to the creeps you mentioned in your first answer. I do know that hubby always brought me down though when the dreaded “C” word came around. No joy. I ain’t saying that YOU have to be all jolly jolly, because clearly it’s not your thing. I just wonder how the attitude affects those you love? You have a unique situation at this point in time – you are close to your son and his FAMILY. His children. Children love Christmas, they have the magic feeling that most of us old farts have forgotten or remember with melancholy. Go enjoy them on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve and rejoice in them. I would if I had such an opportunity. Sorry for the ‘lecture’, I do enjoy your responses each week, and thank you sincerely for participating.

You’re right about children loving the holidays. And I would never do anything to spoil their joy during Christmas. I’m not that much of a Scrooge. 🙂

It turns my stomach how poorly the protocols and policies and PR have gone and are going concerning tests — early on and now — and vaccines (above video), once they became available. It also turns my stomach how poorly this, following video below, other kind of topic is handled in the news (in addition to the hands of law enforcement and prosecutors). While “the right” makes excuses for all the insane things Trump does outside of this specific story and has given life to a conspiracy cult that blames only “the left” for pedophilia (or those with a D in the partisan fight), non-right-leaning commentary tends to scoff entirely when it is stated that Q-anon says there is a child trafficking ring in elite circles… they’ll react this way even if they’ve reported on Epstein, Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, Alan Dershowitz, Prince Andrew…

Your answer to #1 was right on! It bothers me that so many Americans feel “entitled” – i.e. they think they have the right to do whatever they want but bear no responsibility for anything. Every day, people in this country go through their lives benefitting from the collective efforts of everyone. When they brush their teeth, do they contemplate what it’s like to work in a factory that makes toothpaste or toothbrushes? Of course not, nobody does. But we have comfortable lives because we all work together in some way. And when there is a crisis, we all have a responsibility to mitigate it according to our abilities. Trump has given free rein to incivility and airing of grievances whatever they may be. And now he is king of the Republican Party! It is shameful that there many legislators (and Supreme Court justices!) who think like this now. I hope we fire them in the next election for not doing their job to represent their constituents!

I hope we fire them also, but between gerrymandering and the Republicans in the critical swing states taking over the election processes, I’m not holding my breath.

I had a creative father and one year he created a pyramid like package where the base was a record… I was not able to guess what it was correctly. 🤔
