Who Won the Week — 12/5/2021

The idea behind Who Won the Week is to give you the opportunity to select who (or what) you think “won” this past week. Your selection can be anyone or anything — politicians, celebrities, athletes, authors, bloggers, your friends or family members, books, movies, TV shows, businesses, organizations, whatever.

I will be posting this prompt on Sunday mornings (my time). If you want to participate, write your own post designating who you think won the week and why you think they deserve your nod. Then link back to this post and tag you post with FWWTW.

This week I’m going with the Oakland County [Michigan] Prosecutor Karen McDonald. On Tuesday, Ethan Crumbley, a 15-year-old boy, entered a high school bathroom with a backpack, and exited a moment later without it, holding a semiautomatic handgun. He deliberately aimed the gun at students and began firing at them. After students started running, he continued down the hallway pointing the gun and firing into classrooms and at students who were unable to escape.

Crumbley is facing multiple charges as an adult in the attack at Oxford High School: one count of terrorism causing death, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with intent to murder, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm.

Just another day at American school, right? Well, what makes this different, and what makes prosecutor Karen McDonald worthy of this week’s Who Won the Week designation, is that Ethan’s parents were ordered held Saturday on $500,000 bond each, hours after they were found hiding in a commercial building in Detroit and taken into custody.

Shortly after the announcement that the pair was being charged, police officials said that the couple had gone missing. They were located overnight after an extensive search involving police dogs, local law enforcement, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

The parents bought the gun for their son, left the gun in an unlocked drawer in their bedroom, and neglected to act on concerns expressed by school officials that he might act violently. Naturally, once apprehended, Ethan’s parents, Jennifer and James Crumbley, each pleaded not guilty to four counts of involuntary manslaughter.

A day before the fatal shooting, a teacher noticed Crumbley using his cellphone to search for information about firearm ammunition. His mother failed to respond when the school contacted her via voice mail, but she exchanged a text message with her son that read, “LOL I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught.”

So good for the Oakland County prosecutor holding parents accountable for the actions of their minor child. All I can say to Kyle Rittenhouse’s mother is, “Be afraid, be very afraid.”

What about you? Who (or what) do you think won the week?

I read that Jennifer Crumbley wrote a letter to Trump saying that she supported him for grabbing women by their pussies,

I agree, it’s about time that someone other than these obviously ill children take some responsibility

Good choice. I’m with you on this. It’s about time that the parents of these little killers be held to some kind of account. It’s long overdue.

What these kids are doing is learned behavior, most likely the teachings of their parents.

Sherrilynn Ifill of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, whom I greatly respect, said she felt it was wrong to try this seriously ill minor as an adult. From what we’ve learned (and I hope MacDonald didn’t tell the public too much and jeopardize the case in any way), the kid was clearly crying for help. His parents refused to take him home, which the school requested, and they knew he had a gun bc they bought it for him. Then they fled, while their son was in custody.

I sure hope they’re held responsible.

It’s all so heartbreaking and infuriating.

I agree. The parents had an opportunity to prevent this from happening and the didn’t take it. They are responsible.

They shouldn’t have been able to buy him a gun in the first place. You know my attitude to ease of gun availability and violence in your country. By continuing the existing situation will just see more. Wait for the next one folks – and the nationwide trial covered by media. OK I’m cutting. But America has some serious problems in this area. It won’t stop with this one……..Sadly

Sadly, you’re right. It won’t stop. It’s in America’s blood. Literally.

Maybe I’m too critical but it seems America ‘thrives’ on the publicity of a massacre and resulting trial. I’t like a reality show. We need our daily dose of drama. Free availability of guns deadens one’s sensitivity to their danger. A deadly trap…….

When these things happen, which is all too often, the media does sensationalize it. Unfortunately, such publicity may be a motivator for twisted minds. Or in the case of Kyle Rittenhouse, he becomes a darling of the far right.

I just shake my head and glad I don’t live there. Don’t take that personally……you echo everything I think about the way America has/is going…..

I don’t take it personally. I am all for strict gun control laws, women’s rights, pro-choice, and pro-democracy. But the conservative minority in my country holds the political power and they’re destroying the country. Death by a thousand cuts.

Now, when I hear there’s been a shooting, I don’t turn on the news that day; it’s all there will be. And it’s physically oppressive feeling when I have other stresses to deal with… and nobody’s going to do anything about this shared nightmare.

It is about time. When the mom texted his son not to get caught… she might as well have pulled the trigger.
