Mixed Metaphors

I had this interesting text message conversation with my daughter the other day:

We pulled the plug on our e-bikes yesterday.

You did? Why? I thought you sold your old bikes and were psyched about getting e-bikes.

Yeah, we are. That’s why we pulled the plug. They should be delivered next week.

I’m confused.

Why?

Because you said you “pulled the plug.”

Right, we ordered them. Why does that confuse you?

Because “pulled the plug” means to stop or discontinue, like pulling the plug on life support.

No, that’s not what I meant. I meant going ahead with the purchase.

So you meant you “pulled the trigger,” as in committing to a course of action.

Plug, trigger, whatever. We did it, we bought e-bikes. You knew what I meant. Stop being such a stickler.

🙄 Dad, I learned that from you!

Okay, yes, she’s definitely a chip off the old block

I like the different color backgrounds. I didn’t know this was possible on the iphone. 🙂

It is. If you’re using the block editor and tap on the little widget symbol in the lower right. It will let you change either the color of the text within the block or the color of the background.

You need to recite the alphabet song. Then you’ll get it. Hmm, maybe I’ve been spending too much time with my 18-month-old grandson.

Sing the nomenclature song with me children

        Our daddy rides a b-bike
        b for buggered one
        Mummy rides a co-bike
        Another clapped out one

        Yes Billy?

        My daddy loves his b-bike….
        Mummy loves her co-bike too….

See children there is joy in old things……

They can’t buy new tyres miss…..they’re quite looking forward to riding on the rims….

        A true hippie family Fan……

Plus: old bikes versus e-bikes. New = e.

Of course Marleen, old bikes = ‘o bikes’…

Are buggered bikes what they are calling ‘b bikes’ today? I’m not up with the latest bike nomenclature. Like technology. I leave it all to the young ones……

If you pull the plug in a bathtub, everything goes down the drain.

And if you pull the trigger at a protest, you can claim self defense.

One of my sons was a juror in a self-defense (versus murder) case, decided yesterday. (It didn’t involve a gun, though; nor a planned protest.)

I think we need another metaphor. Pulled the pully? Clicked the trigger mechanism? Pressed send? Who wants to say “I/we pulled the trigger?”

I would have been as confused as your daughter was. “Pulled the plug.” does sound as if you had changed your mind about getting an eBike.
