TMP — WordPress Is At It Again

Every Monday, Paula Light, with her The Monday Peeve prompt, gives us an opportunity to vent or rant about something that pisses us off. What pisses me off today is that The WordPress iOS app is screwing with me again.

It was almost 13 month ago, shortly after Apple introduced iOS 14 for its iPhones, that WordPress launched version 16.0 of its iOS app. Suddenly the WordPress app didn’t recognized that I was logged in to WordPress, so I could neither like nor comment on posts because the app didn’t recognize me.

Last November and December, and even three or four months into this year, I spent a whole lot of time exchanging messages with the happiness engineers trying to get them to resolve these issues. Unfortunately, to this day, while it now works most of the time for most posts, there are still some situations where I am unable to like a post or to leave a comment.

But most recently, apparently with the latest update to the WordPress iOS app, if I visit a site, either from my reader or from links in my notifications, when I go to like a post, I get a message saying “You and X other bloggers like this.” But my Gravatar doesn’t show up, as it normally does after I like a post. See below.

So then I refresh the page to find that my “Like” is no longer showing up!

Then I go to the Reader and read the post there (as oposed to visiting the actual site). On the Reader I tap “Like,” and go back and visit the site again. This time, my Gravatar shows up, but it doesn’t say “You and X other bloggers like this.” But it does show that 6 bloggers, rather than 5, liked the post.

I’m really pissed that, after more than a year, WordPress can’t seem to figure out how to get its iOS app to work correctly when it comes to liking posts and leaving comments. And it requires more steps and more time for me to try and like and comment. And even then, it doesn’t work, more often than not.

Curiouser and curiouser! I have never had my Gravatar show up any place other than all the way on the left and I am always surprised by how many times Paula id right next to me.

Hard to like such a frustrating message. My pet WP peeve is that when I center poems, which I always do, they sometimes show up as left justified on the Reader and other times show up as paragraphs. I’ve never figured out why this is. I believe it is random. The only consistent thing is that they never show up as centered unless one clicks on the title and the page resets itself. Always a new thrill.

Post in the Reader, especially poetry, never appears as it does when I visit the blog. But your blog is one of those where if I like it when I go to your actual blog it doesn’t seem to take. It only does when I like it in the Reader. I guess the good news for you is that I read your posts twice, once on your blog and once in my Reader.

Ah, Thanks, Fandango. Wonder if they are aware of the glitch? Probably not top priority for them. The only way around it is to take a photo of the poem and post it, I guess. But, a real pain.

I’m trying not to get really pissed about this because they just keep changing things. They don’t tell us what they are doing or even MORE important WHY they are doing whatever they are doing. Really — don’t get me started!

It’s soooo frustrating! I wonder if this has anything to do with my issue of WP “forgetting” who I am when I come back to finish a post and it says WELCOME TO WORDPRESS and asks me to take a tour. There is something really weird going on that it doesn’t recognize us from the reader to the browser and back again…

I think they don’t beta test their releases very well. They fix bugs or introduce new features and in the process, break other functionality that was previously working.

Well I just thought it was some odd quirk of Safari on my desktop, but I’ve been having the same issue as you for the last three or four days. It just started not me after an iOs upgrade.

It seems like WP has blocked your likes. I would recommend talking to them and telling them to unblock it. I’ve talked to a number of bloggers that have been blocked from liking posts on WP for no real reason and something similar was happening to them. It happens most often when they update stuff.

By the last part I mean when WP updates stuff like their app.

Yes, I understood that. And I think they must have had a new update to their iOS app within the past week, because that’s when this issue started to surface.

I think, WP blocks some of the users from linking post and comments often to prevent any spam.
However, doing this sometimes blocks even the genuine users.
    You should contact them.

Sometimes, when I try to comment on someone’s site, I get this message, ‘INVALID SECURITY TOKEN’ any idea why this is, or what it means?

How odd. Also, I find it interesting that whenever I hear about the “Happiness Engineers” I hear very little actual happiness from bloggers.

Ugh, this sounds frustrating! I thankfully can still use WP quite well, but then again I mostly use it on my PC and never use the WP app to read anything – when on my phone, I always open blog posts in my browser.

WordPress has been getting on my nerves as well. I had decided to move another blog over here, but I found out Widgets also use the block editor now, and noped right out. I know, I know, give it time and you’ll get used. I haven’t. I’m only still here while my current blog still allows me to keep in touch with some people, but jumping ship has been more and more attractive lately.

Here’s hoping they fix things for good, this is ridiculous!

We are so dependent on programming, now. And there aren’t enough people who can make it work. Yesterday, I had an online court date (concerning a scammer who has been getting moneh out of my mom). I prepared my presentation within one of my email companies function, and I then tried to email it to my other email address. It disappeared completely. (I have to compose it all over again. Good thing the other person filed for a continuance.)

Besides not having enough people to make all the things we use run well, there probably aren’t enough people for oversight and regulation.

        Good news, though:

        https://news.yahoo.com/biden-choice-justice-antitrust-post-233344954.html

The bipartisan vote Tuesday [November 16th] was 68-29 to confirm Jonathan Kanter, an antitrust lawyer who has opposed tech giants in private practice, as assistant attorney general heading the Justice Department’s antitrust division. The position has been without a permanent head for nearly a year as Biden and his advisers sifted through a number of qualified candidates and then nominated Kanter in July to face Senate vetting.
