Thursday Inspiration — The Thrill is Gone

Truth be told, I’ve never been much of a thrill seeker. I’ve never been sky diving. Not bungee jumping, either. About the most thrilling things I’ve done have been whitewater rafting on the New River in West Virginia, downhill skiing on a black diamond slope at Killington in Vermont, and driving in road rallies with my best friend from college.

And I wasn’t particularly good at any of those activities, more often experiencing the agony of defeat rather than the thrill of victory. I almost drowned in the New River. I cracked two ribs at Killington. And the best I ever managed at a road rally was 12th place. Out of 18 cars participating.

All that said. I’ve had a fun and enjoyable life, albeit not what most people would call a thrilling life. I’m just an ordinary guy who has lived a rather unremarkable life. But I’m happy. I’m content.

And in honor of Jim Adams’ Thursday Inspiration prompt, which asks us to respond to this prompt using the word “thrill,” or going with the above thrilling photo, I’m going to end this post with the great song from blues artist B.B. King titled, “The Thrill is Gone.”

B.B. can really bend those strings, thanks for selecting this song Fandango. Great video. Come to think of it, I have not accomplished much as a thrill seeker either.

Anyone who goes down a black diamond run at a place called Killington is tempting fate my friend. You’re lucky you didn’t lose your whatsits. Ski’s and whatsits don’t mix…….

While I have ski’d places in US I would never go near any Kill places. Jeez Fan that’s an open death invite……

Hope you don’t mind my flippant use of Fan……Us Aussies are flippant thrill seekers/risk takers………but I haven’t cracked a rib yet……just falling off a ladder……..how unexciting is that?……

You can call me Fan or Dango. I’ve been called both. Yeah, I suppose KILLington might be a ski mountain name that might give you pause, but it is the best ski resort in Vermont.

Went skiing in Alta Utah. Didn’t come a way a Mormon much to the disappointed locals. Said I wasn’t susceptible. Funny, therapists have said that to me about hypnosis. I’m a lost cause Fan…..

Better have a satisfying life than a thrilling one.

I think thrill is relative, we all have our level of risk. We don’t tend to see the things WE do as risky but are more likely to ascribe it to what others do. I’ve done things for fun or to test myself that my friends say they never would but that in comparison to others I know were pretty tame (like the rides on top of the Stratosphere in Vegas). Perspective is everything. 😉

You are right. Some have told me that whitewater rafting would be too much of a risk for them. I thought it was fun, even though I did get tossed from the raft on one of the rapids.

How does that old saying go? A time for living and so forth? You’ve earned the right to rest at this stage. You’ve got a lot of living crammed into your eighty years fella. Be proud.
