Anomaly

Yesterday my blog received 971 views. Considering that my blog had averaged 360 views a day for the first seven days this month, getting 971 in one day was quite an anomaly.

I suppose every blogger has had this happen once in a while. It happened to me once before. Back in May of 2019, my blog got 1,556 views in one day. And what stood out on that day was that more than 60% — 952 — were from Germany.

But yesterday, more than two-thirds of my views were from the U.S., which is higher than my typical day, where U.S. views run between 30 to 40 percent of my total views. And as to likes and comments, they were pretty much in line with the number of likes and comments I get on a typical day, so way fewer, given the number of views I got, than one would expect.

I have no idea what caused my blog’s views to spike yesterday. Things are back to “normal” today, as by 12:30 pm, I’ve gotten 232 views, 110 of which have been from the U.S.

Have any of you had any unusual or unexplainable spikes in your views lately?

The last time I had that happen to me, someone had found Owen’s photographs of the old Grafton railroad and I think a whole club of railroad aficianados looked at all the pictures. It was a one day phenomenon. Before there, there was one post from Rich that went to 1400 for ONE day and before THAT, I had ONE post that went up to about 1000 a day for three days running and then vanished. Sometimes some individual piece gets discovered and every picture view is a hit, so you wind up getting a ton of reviews because folks are looking at pictures. In Rich’s case, his post got picked up and reblogged by a couple of really popular bloggers. Mine was a review of a a new TV show and for some reason it bounced to the top of the Google hit list — so anyone who looked for reviews on the show found ME.

For a couple of months, Google had me at the top of some group, so I got HUGE numbers for a couple of months, but I knew it wouldn’t last. It didn’t, but I’ll never match the numbers I got those two years.

I don’t spend much time looking at the stats. Since I crossed that one million mark, I figured I’d made it and it was likely to be all downhill from there. It hasn’t been all downhill, but it turns out if you write less, you get fewer hits. Who knew?

I have. Last week, I got 877 views in one day. Most days I’m averaging about 450 views. Its weird how sometimes the stats can spike! X

I usually get more views on Monday because of WDYS and a couple of reblogs.

I swear someone is employed to play around with these. This makes no sense either…

I had one back in 2012 and then back in 2018. I’m pretty sure the one in 2012 was because some thought the world was about to end 😁. 2018 is still a mystery.

It happened to me in June 2020. My stats rocketed to nearly 700 and I did a post on it as most views were from South Korea. My views have taken a dive recently though but my content is probably a bit off as we’ve had other priorities. Impressive ratings though Fandango

I’ve never looked. So I have no idea. I DO know that some posts are getting more and more popular though. And lately I’ve had no less than three ‘spam’ bots following my blog (oh great joy in the morning). So I went and looked, and my average is about 200 (I guess). However on Halloween or that weekend, I got 400 once. My countries are a truly mixed bag of everywhere except Asia. It’s all good.

I don’t look at my stats regularly enough to know if or when I had jumps in views. That is quite a sizable jump in a day. Did you ever figure out why?
