Fandango’s Provocative Question #139

FPQ

Welcome once again to Fandango’s Provocative Question. Each week I will pose what I think is a provocative question for your consideration.

By provocative, I don’t mean a question that will cause annoyance or anger. Nor do I mean a question intended to arouse sexual desire or interest.

What I do mean is a question that is likely to get you to think, to be creative, and to provoke a response. Hopefully a positive response.

I know people who appear to be very spontaneous. I know that I was much more spontaneous when I was younger than I am now, and I thought at the time that my spontaneity was a positive trait.

But some criticized me for being too impulsive and for not always thinking about the consequences of my actions or decisions. As I grew older, particularly after I became a parent, I tried to be more steadfast, more constant, more purposeful, more reliable.

This got me wondering about the character traits of spontaneity and stability. And that brings me to this week’s provocative question.

Do you consider yourself today to be more of a spontaneous person or more of a stable person? Which characteristic in others, spontaneity or stability, do you prefer? Why?

If you choose to participate, write a post with your response to the question. Once you are done, tag your post with #FPQ and create a pingback to this post if you are on WordPress. Or you can simply include a link to your post in the comments. But remember to check to confirm that your pingback or your link shows up in the comments.

I consider myself to be reasonably spontaneous… but, whoah, is that loaded to contrast these two words. Then I let it sink in… am I really more stable or more something else? I’m more stable. I read the question and went through the processing before I read your lead-up.

I will add that sometimes, what may appear as spontaneous is simply not being self-defined. I remember being at a party and not drinking when someone who was clearly not regulating himself started asking me why I wasn’t drinking. I say “started” because he continued.

I “didn’t think I needed” to explain, so I only said I didn’t want to be drinking. He asked at least a couple more times. I found this irritating and intrusive. There actually was further “reason” — but it didn’t matter. Anyone can simply not drink for any reason or no reason at all.

This is a loaded question. I think spontaneously but unless I have “a partner in crime,” I don’t act on it. So is that stable or boring? 😉

I have a tendency to over-think and over-plan, so I might have a spontaneous idea, but then I need to plan carefully how or if, to execute.

Both of course!  It would be boring to have just one.😀

I fly by the seat of my pants. I always have, but when I decide to do something, even when I know it’s a bad idea, I will do it regardless. A bit like when I deleted my prior blog. I’d been working on it for five years, got up one morning and hit delete site. That’s just how I am

I think most adults are a little of both. Some of us are more spontaneous and some more stable or, as we like to put it, stubborn. Few people I know are one or the other. Garry is very stubborn, but with the right incentive can surprise you. Owen is very stubborn except when he isn’t. But the thing is, most adults who function in a normal world are not ONE thing. Wouldn’t it be boring if we were?

I agree, but most tend toward one more than the other.

Thats a very good question. I hope i became much more reliable the last years. But some occasions always forcing to react in a uncommon way. 😉 I was always accused of being unpredictable. But this is exactly what has literally saved my life so far. I had some martial life acts in real. Have a beautiful weekend! xx Michael
