Tomorrow is a Holiday

“Tomorrow is Columbus Day,” Dan said, so I don’t have to go to work. What do you want to do?”

“How can you be so cavalier about Columbus Day,” Debbie asked her husband. “It’s a racist holiday. Columbus was responsible for the slaughter and enslavement of the indigenous people of North America. And yet somehow they were stoic enough to have survived. With the passage of time, we should stop celebrating Christopher Columbus. He didn’t even know that he had landed in the Americas. He thought he was in India, which is why he mistakenly called the indigenous people Indians. Even the president has declared October 11th to be Indigenous Peoples’ Day.”

“Whatever,” Dan said. “I still don’t have to go to work tomorrow, so what do you want to do?”

I hate Columbus Day! I avoid sales that are named after him.

Unless you actually LIVE in Boston proper, most offices in which I worked have long since stopped giving Columbus day as a holiday. My Native American friends really resented the whole thing and are glad in at least Massachusetts, it’s now officially “Native American Day.” Doesn’t make up for losing everything, but it looks good on the calendar.

Surely there is another deserving Italian to whom the holiday could ascribed — like maybe Da Vinci or Galileo?

Thank you, yes. Let’s commemorate the Native American presence that was already here.

Now that reaction doesn’t surprise me at all. Who cares the reason why, just a day off ☹️

I think I feel that way about all of the holidays – their origins and the commercialism, waste, greed associated with them make them so ugly – and yet, it is so great to have a day off work. Unless you work for the health service and don’t get a day off work!!

Or, like me, you’re retired, in which case every day is a day off! 😉
