“Do you believe in the human soul?” Kathy asked.
“Of course I do,” Max responded.
“What about other animals?”
“Other animals?” Max asked. “You mean like dogs, elephants, lions, or horses?”
“Yes,” Kathy said. “And fish and birds.”
“No,” Max said emphatically. “Only humans have souls. Not animals.”
“Well,” Kathy said, “how do explained that?” she said, pointing to the ghostly image of a bird floating up and out from the parakeet’s cage.
“That?” Max said. “That’s nothing. Polly just likes to blow smoke rings and sometimes they appear to look sorta like birds.”
