Dr. Tanya has decided to change things up a bit for her weekly Blogging Insights prompt. Instead of using the Q&A format, she’s going to provide us with a quote about blogging or writing and ask us to express our opinion about said quote.
Except today’s quote has nothing to do with blogging or writing.
“Did you know that 1980 and 2021 are as far apart as 1980 and 1939?”
It’s all about math and the median, which is the middle number in a sorted, ascending or descending, list of numbers. For this exercise, your age is the median number. Just take your birth year and subtract your age from your birth year to find the distance applicable to you.
The older you are, the more dramatic the difference. For an old fart like me, my birth year serves as the median number between 2021 and 1871.
This, That, and the Other 
OK, you’re 75, seven years old than I am, and depending on where you live and how well you care for yourself, you may have another 35 years to go or more. “Old fart”? Not really.

The key age is 95. Get past that and the odds of 110 is 50%

I really have been contemplating this reality from time to time — more and more so. My dad was born in ‘39. It never seemed forever ago. Now, it clearly is passing from many memories… even the forties are less and less recalled. Nuanced understanding is waning in those who should really know but know less and less. The generations have scooted along the timeline. It amazes me to think of all the change my ninety-two-year-old “father-in-law” has seen. (I’m divorced from his son, but he welcomed me “to the tribe” [the actual tribe] on the day of my marriage — and that is that.)
I think that when I reach the age which is the number of the year in the 1900s that I was born, I’ll perceive it to be a sign that I’m old. That doesn’t apply to everyone. Someone born in ‘45 shouldn’t have felt old at the age of 45, although I think they tended to do that. Yet, enough pushed the envelope, changed our attitudes in this culture… so I don’t already feel old. But we have to recognize the youngsters. They aren’t just kids. They’re capable and responsible for taking hold now and seeing the future into some meaningful. And, not only that, getting to live their lives is why they’re here.

I am the median between 1955 and 2021. That sounds weird. I do math like this in my head too all the time. Or I need to know the year of a song or a film so I can run through my age or the age of my family at the time. My father is forty years older than me, so when I was ten he was four times my age, when I was twenty he was twice, and someday we’ll be the same age if this keeps on.

Wait. If your father is 40 years older than you, when you were 10, he would have been 50, or five times your age. And when you were 20, he was 60, or three times your age. When you are 40, he’ll be 80, or twice your age. So your math is wrong. Right? Or maybe your father was only 30 when you were born, in which case your multiplication was right.

I never thought of it in terms of math but then I am challenged in that area.
Age is just a number. You are only as old as you feel etc etc.
I believe that 60 is the new 40 and the age of retirement should be pushed to 70. With all the medical advances it is possible to live a much longer , healthier and productive life.
