    Do you remember Yogi Berra. I’m sure he said something like “the future ain’t what it used to be”. You reminded me of that.

    I feel like there was a golden moment, when we were trying to improve things; enough people wanted to make “a more perfect union.” Maybe I could go as far back as after the Civil War. But I think of the time of Teddy Roosevelt (and his anti/monopolistic efforts) and onward.

    However, even at that time there was the backlash of individuals who wanted to undermine the progress of the Emancipation Proclamation and the goal of opportunity for people who weren’t already rich or established.

    Of course, we needed to think through our civil rights. We were working on that… and without forgetting that we don’t want to be a nation of aristocrats or the ridiculously rich.

    And then a set of narratives was devised for, and succeeded in, distracting and fooling enough people to derail us.

      … anti-monopolistic …

      Hyphenated.

      { Not either/or or and/or. }

    In North America, the future is always greater than the sum of the past, because we live with one foot in the yet-to-come and await what comes with baited breath. It’s not so much that we expect the future to be better, as we expect it to be DIFFERENT, and it is that difference that gets us jazzed up.

      I’m not sure about that, the “we” part. Many people seem to think it should be largely the same in that if it was the Wild West it should still be the Wild West. Shoot-m-up; see who survives. Nevertheless, the idea of being jazzed up is interesting.

    For me it always pops up when I don’t expect it. Good quote!
