Welcome once again to Fandango’s Provocative Question. Each week I will pose what I think is a provocative question for your consideration.
By provocative, I don’t mean a question that will cause annoyance or anger. Nor do I mean a question intended to arouse sexual desire or interest.
What I do mean is a question that is likely to get you to think, to be creative, and to provoke a response. Hopefully a positive response.
It seems to me that there are a lot of things to worry about these days. Whether we’re talking about the climate, politics, the seemingly never ending pandemic, natural disasters, social injustice, mass shootings, cultural clashes, or wars, the news is rarely good. I have almost gotten to the point that I’m considering stopping reading or watching the news because I find it both disheartening and depressing.
So with this in mind, my provocative question this week is this…
What worries you the most about the future? Why is that your biggest concern? Or are you not that concerned about the future?

Could not narrow it down to just one, so my top three are:
1) Climate change
2) The collapse of the internet
3) WWIII, the last war

You know, occasionally a bunch of websites or servers are hacked and go down for hours, or storms interrupt service, etc., I mean, I panic when my WIFI has a hiccup and I have to reset the router! So, I worry about the whole thing stopping, then most services at banks, stores, blogging platforms, and so on, would come to a halt, too.

If you live in any kind of rural setting and you are, as we are, limited to a single provider — and that provider sucks — you realize how much you depend on the internet and how having one that doesn’t do the job really matters.

I feel the same. Very discouraging and depressing so I have cut back my news reading. Of course then I feel guilt about it and seems as if I’m putting my head in the sand. A person can only take so much negativity. I rarely get out but even then I find rudeness and bizarre actions are now commonplace.

There are a lot of concerns. I think I can select one, though. It seems to be that education is moving toward only being about employment, and not well-rounded understanding and thinking skills. I’m not saying this as a criticism of public schooling (vicious criticism of which is another of my great worries or concerns). I’m seeing it all around (in various kinds of schools and in rhetorical propaganda), and it’s reflected in the emphasis on money. It’s difficult to explain, because I certainly understand wanting to be paid well in a job or to do well with a business. I think our broad awareness has been decreasing as so-called reasoning has shifted to favoring the haves (and away from any improvements in our civilization).

On a personal level more close to home, my mother’s doctor said he doesn’t know what should be done but probably call an elder law attorney about my mother because she has dementia. (I had been in the office with her when he gave her a test, recently, and he didn’t say that she had dementia.) Then, someone else from his office called me and made a whole bunch of other recommendations “instead.”

Bad education = stupid citizens. I have to wonder what, if anything, they ARE learning in school? As far as I can tell, they are learning how to take tests so they can move to the next grade. i don’t think they are learning anything.

For some reason I can’t seem to post a comment on your post thanks to yet another WordPress bug. But what I wanted to say was that I worry about pretty much the same things you do. I see our society and civilization seeming to unravel and I don’t see those in a position to hold it together being able to do so. In fact, they seem to be pulling on the threads so that the unraveling is escalating. And I’m very worried about that, Melanie.

At least in the ‘old days’ they called snake oil what it was.
And, then, if they lose a lawsuit…
they only get a slap on the wrist. A money judgment is just a cost of doing business to them. They don’t care.

Propaganda.
I think people can cope with all sorts of hardships and endure and recover, so long as their moral fibre is intact. But when people do terrible things because they believe that they have a cause worthy of violence and destruction, it is frightening. People being misled to the point they think they have a right to lash out and destroy other people. Angry violent people who think they are right – that is scary stuff.

I agree, especially when they are incited to commit violent acts based upon misinformation and lies being spread by those in power.

Some of my family were in Rwanda and Burundi back in the nineties. They saw how very quickly a situation can spread and how people who were formally neighbours could do the most terrible things to each other. But that happened before the internet. In this age of social media…propaganda can spread more rapidly than ever.

You know, they do not HAVE to believe the lies. YOU don’t believe them. WE don’t believe them. Believing the bullshit is a CHOICE. Those people made a choice to be the way they are. Do not give them an out because they were tricked. Anyone who wants to know the truth can find it. But you have to care enough to bother — and they don’t care.

You make an excellent point, but there are so many ignorant, gullible people that populate this country who will believe almost anything. Take flat-Earthers, for example. Seriously?

My wi-fi dropped out three times while I wrote a response to this. I’ll post it tomorrow in the morning. Today, I think I’ll worry about baseball. That’s what’s truly great about sports. It’s so unimportant, it’s safe to worry about it. The worst that will happen is your team will lose and we can survive that catastrophe. Everything else is far, far scarier.

In the big scheme of things – pollution. In the smaller picture of things – Covid (I know three unvaccinated people personally). And in my immediate vicinity – being alone.
