“Screw him,” Rebecca said. “I’m not going to let that stubborn old coot stymie me for one more day. First thing tomorrow morning I’m going to tear out that ugly, circa 1960s, burnt orange shag rug and replace it with hardwood flooring.”
“Good for you, Becky,” her brother, Jim, said. “It’s almost surreal how he’s refused to consider replacing that ratty old rug.”
“Well, I’m sure it reminds him of Mom,” Rebecca said. “They picked it out together when they first bought the place.”
“That was like sixty years ago,” Jim said. “Who knows what crap is lurking within the threads of that rug. Gross!”
“Yes, it’s for his own good,” Rebecca rationalized. “I’m sure he’ll warm up to the wood floor eventually.”
Jim smiled. “Yeah, right. He’s Dad, remember. He’ll never forgive us.”

I think that Rebecca and Jim are making a mistake as that old rug may hold some memories left from a lovemaking session where they shagged on the shag.

Yes, but isn’t it dad’s house? Crappy shag rug notwithstanding, that probably counts for something. Now, if he was living in HER house, that would be something else but since he picked out the rug with his wife, it must be HIS house. Crappy rug or not, the person who owns the place should have a say in how it is treated. Maybe she could find a rug that is similar but not so grungy. You know. Compromise?

Yeah, technically, Dad could sue them or her… even if he wouldn’t… sue, that is. They’d be getting off easy, perhaps, by not being forgiven.

I feel the same way about the rug in my sitting room. I don’t like it….but it cost a fortune – not my money, my landlord’s, so I am stuck with it!
