Weekend Writing Prompt — Tessellate

Sammi Cox has challenged us to write a 58 word post using the word “tessellate.”

I’ve never heard of or used that word before.

So I googled it. Tessellate means “to form into or adorn with mosaic.”

Now all I have to do is to figure out how to fit it into a post.

Fuhgeddaboudit. I give up.

Here We Go Again

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water….

I took a lot of grief from some commenters on my last Provocative Question post in which I asked if people were fully vaccinated. In that post I pointed out that…

COVID-19 cases are back on the rise in the U.S., with a disproportionate number new cases among unvaccinated people. Further, the rise of the delta variant of the virus is rapidly speeding transmission among those who haven’t been fully vaccinated, and that variant accounts for more than half of all new COVID-19 cases in the U.S.

Yet some took offense when I suggested that not getting vaccinated was selfish. But here we are. Just as health experts predicted, the combination of unvaccinated people and the more contagious delta strain of coronavirus has led to new COVID-19 surges. According to Johns Hopkins University, in 46 states, the rates of new cases this past week were at least 10% higher than the rates of new cases the previous week. And in 31 states, new cases this past week were at least 50% higher than new cases the previous week.

The vast majority of new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in the U.S. have one thing in common: They’re among unvaccinated people. Duh! More than 99% of all COVID-19 deaths in June were among unvaccinated people, according to the CDC.

But go ahead, folks. Stubbornly refuse to get vaccinated, don’t wear face masks, or maintain social distancing. Never mind that not getting vaccinated and not wearing face masks could result in keeping COVID around indefinitely. Maybe you don’t give a shit about your own health, but some of us want to stay healthy and alive.

SoCS — Tainted Word

For today’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt from Linda G. Hill, we are asked to write a post about our least favorite word.

Up until about six years ago, I didn’t have strong feelings one way or the other about what is now my least favorite word. It’s actually a pretty innocuous word. It’s a word that has three primary definitions.

The first definition is associated with several card games, where it refers to a playing card of the suit chosen to rank above the others, which can win a trick where a card of a different suit has been led.

The second definition is associated with beating someone or something by saying or doing something better.

The third definition is a dependable and exemplary person.

Have you figured out the word I’m referring to yet, the word that I now consider to be my least favorite word? Of course you have. You are very bright people, so you know that the word I’m thinking of is…

Today the word “trump” conjures up a very negative feeling in me. The word is not a powerful card, or something or someone that beats something or someone else. And it’s certainly not a dependable or exemplary person.

No, in my mind, thanks to Donald J. Trump, synonyms for the word “trump” are incompetent, arrogant, idiotic, egotistical, ignorant, racist, sexist, narcissistic, liar, conman, and asshole. Donald Trump has single-handedly redefined the meaning of the word and turned it into my least favorite word. Whenever I hear or see the word “trump” today, it makes me sick to my stomach.
