Jamie and his mother moved to a new town after his parents got divorced. He decided to explore his new neighborhood and the woods behind his house. As the inquisitive thirteen-year-old boy wandered deeper into the forest, he saw a strange-looking woman standing behind a cauldron holding a large spoon and reciting a some sort of chant in a language he couldn’t understand.
Thinking he had come across an evil witch, he turned around to walk away, but suddenly he heard her call out to him. “You’d better turn back around, boy, if you know what’s good for you,” the woman said. When Jamie just stood there with his back to her, she yelled out, “I said turn around and come over here.” This time Jamie did as the woman instructed him.
When he arrived next to her he pleaded, “Oh please, Miss Witch, do not turn me into a toad and eat me.”
“So you think I’m a witch, do you?” the woman said. “What makes you think that?”
“You’re standing over a cauldron stirring a bubbly mix and reciting an incantation of some sort,” Jamie said. “What else could you be if not a witch?”
“Maybe I’m just a woman from the old country who is stewing a rabbit for dinner tonight to feed my family. And what you think is an incantation may actually be a prayer for the stew to be nourishing and delicious,” she said to Jamie. “Does that allay your fears, boy.”
“No it does not,” Jamie said defiantly.
“Well, boy, it’s a free country and you’re entitled to your own opinion. So skedaddle before I turn you into a frog and toss you into this here cauldron to spice up my rabbit stew,” the woman said. “Go on, get out of my woods, go back to your mama, and leave me in private so I can enjoy this cosmopolitan cocktail I’m about to fix for myself.”
