Truthful Tuesday — Superstition

Frank, aka PCGuy, has published another one of his Truthful Tuesday posts, and this week Frank wants to know…

Whether tossing a pinch of salt over your shoulder or not walking under ladders, and whether you believe in the superstition or not, what superstition, if any, do you still observe?

I was thinking about just saying “No, Frank, I’m not at all superstitious about anything” in a comment on Frank’s post and not writing my own post today. I’m a pragmatic guy, an atheist, and a realist, and I simply don’t believe in that kind of stuff. So why, as someone who doesn’t observe any superstitions whatsoever, bother writing a whole post just to say “no”?

I can think of only one reason to do so and this is it…

Well, that and for some clickbait.

    There were so many superstitions as I was growing up. The dropping of salt being unlucky, and throwing it over your shoulder to stop bad luck. I still do it now because it was so ingrained in my childhood.

    I don’t walk under ladders because I don’t trust them not to collapse.

    I have more traditions then superstitions… my Dad was a 13th baby and so he always bought his lottery tickets on Friday the 13th for luck and now I will occasionally do this. My grandmother always said it was good luck to have oysters and crackers for the new year… I will still usually have some after midnight of the first of the year.

      My dad’s mom liked pickled herring to be on hand for the new year observance. My dad was pleased that I remembered this and had herring included in a spread of goodies when he came over on New Year’s Eve.
