Song Lyric Sunday — What’s New?

For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme, Jim Adams is focusing on June as the traditional month for nuptials, with the brides wearing something “old, “new, “borrowed” and “blue.” The song I chose is all about love, although there is no specific mention of wedding bells. The song is “What’s New Pussycat?”

“What’s New Pussycat” was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David as the theme song for the Peter Sellers movie What’s New Pussycat? It was recorded by Welsh singer Tom Jones and released in the summer of 1965, peaking at number 3 in the U.S. charts. The song was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1966 but lost to “The Shadow of Your Smile.”

Bacharach said that he was inspired to write the song by watching Peter Sellers and his craziness in that movie. He said that the song was originally an instrumental, but he put the words to it when he was trying to capture some of the sexual craziness Sellers portrayed in the movie.

The song was intentionally outrageous, with the singer telling a girl to powder her pussycat nose so he can kiss her “sweet little pussycat lips.” At the time, singer Tom Jones was developing an image as a ribald pop star, and this song played right into it. Jones said that, “Most songs are about the relationship between men and women, and so sex is involved. I act it out as best I can.”

Here are the lyrics to “What’s New Pussycat?”

What’s new pussycat? Woah, woah
What’s new pussycat? Woah, woah
Pussycat, pussycat
I’ve got flowers
And lots of hours
To spend with you
So go and powder your cute little pussycat nose!
Pussycat, pussycat
I love you
Yes, I do!
You and your pussycat nose!

What’s new pussycat? Woah, woah
What’s new pussycat? Woah, woah

Pussycat, pussycat
You’re so thrilling
And I’m so willing
To care for you
So go and make up your cute little pussycat face!
Pussycat, pussycat
I love you
Yes, I do!
You and your pussycat face!

What’s new pussycat? Woah, woah
What’s new pussycat? Woah, woah

Pussycat, pussycat
You’re delicious
And if my wishes
Can all come true
I’ll soon be kissing your sweet little pussycat lips!
Pussycat, pussycat
I love you
Yes, I do!
You and your pussycat lips!
You and your pussycat eyes!
You and your pussycat nose!

I just realized that I already used this song for a Song Lyric Sunday prompt back in December 2018 when Helen Vahdati was still hosting and the theme was “new.” Oh well, it’s already written and I’m too tired to start over from scratch.

Tom Jones has revealed he is sick of female fans throwing their underwear at him. The first time this happened, he was sweating so he wiped his brow with the underwear and handed them back and said, ‘Watch you don’t catch cold like that’ and it just went from there. Interesting choice Fandango.

Such a classic but I didn’t know the background of the song. Thanks for the story!
