Share Your World — Binary Questions

It’s Monday and it’s time for Melanie’s Share Your World questions. So let’s get right to it.

Would you rather be a super nice person and be depressed all your life, or be happy and a total asshole?

This seems to be a rather binary question. The notion that being kind and being depressed are linked, or that being happy and being an asshole are linked, is unrealistic. One can be a nice person without being depressed and one can be a happy person without being a total asshole. And one can be both nice and happy or both depressed and an asshole.

Have you ever made someone cry?

I have no doubts that I have made someone cry. Most likely, multiple someones.

Are you a dreamer or a go-getter?

Again, this, too, is a binary question. I like to consider myself a little bit of both. Although now that I’m a retired old fart, a lot of the go-getter in me has gotten up and gone.

If you were in a band, what instrument would you play?

Piano or electronic keyboard, although I’ve never been in a band and I don’t know how to play a piano or a keyboard.

Do you feel gratitude is necessary?

I think it’s nice to show gratitude and appreciation for what you have and toward those you love. Is gratitude necessary? Well, food, water, oxygen, light, shelter, clothing, and sleep are necessary in order to survive. One can, I suppose, survive without feeling or demonstrating gratitude, but failure to do so will likely result in a lonely, unfulfilling existence.

I like how you got around that first question – essentially by making it non-binary! Good answers!

        Kazoos are fun.

I played a drum on a stage “in public” once, just because no one else was available.

As far as what I think or have thought I’d like to play, I think bass guitar. But also trombone (which I, in fact, told a music director I wanted to learn in grade school) and, at one point, harp (which I looked into and which perhaps could have influenced my living environment for more peace if I had learned it before my husband and I had children and he, especially after the very first one, became a jealous child himself).

Thank you Fandango for Sharing Your World! Kazoo? Tambourine? I still think someone learning those simple instruments would have to have a sense of rhythm to make ’em work; plus a rudimentary knowledge of music (being able to read it). But a valid point from Jim, hmm? Your answer to the first question was excellent! Things are never that black and white, are they? Plus it has been pointed out to me several times now that depressed people are often grouchy people because they’re in pain. And *ssholes aren’t happy, because they’re *ssholes and disliked on a large scale. Again though, only pigeons fit into pigeonholes, and people are too complex for binary thinking. You always provide great answers and this week was no different! Kudos!

I am glad you weren’t offended by my calling two of your questions “binary.”

Good answers this week as always. I have always been a dreamer, but there are things you have to be a go getter about. And I too would pick the piano/keyboards for a band.
