“You have this innate talent,” the casting director of the television show said. “You’re fortunate to have been blessed with rugged good looks and your demeanor displays a lot of pizzazz.”

George was thrilled with the feedback from the casting director. He thought the audition went well and figured that he was a shoo-in for the part. And yet he was worried that a ‘but’ was coming.

“That said,” the casting director said, “the role for which you’re auditioning is that of a lost soul, a vagrant, a man down on his luck. I’m not sure you fit in that frame. However, there’s another role in a different production for which you might be a better fit.”

Feeling disappointed that he wasn’t going to get the part for which he had auditioned, George was also excited about the other opportunity that the casting director thought he might be more well suited for. “Great,” he said. “What’s the next step?”

“Let me call my colleague and let her know that you might be perfect for her part.” The casting director turned his back on George, picked up his phone, and spoke to the person who answered. George could here bits and pieces of the conversation, including phrases like “perfect for the part” and “has the right look.”

When he got off the phone, the casting director turned to George and said, “You need to head over to sound stage three. Alyse is looking forward to meeting you.”

“Thank you,” George said. “So isn’t that where they’re shooting ‘Law and Order: Special Victims Unit’? Would you mind telling me what the role is?”

“Sure,” the casting director said. “Alyse is looking to cast for a sociopathic serial rapist, and I think, based upon what I’ve seen here, you’d be extremely well suited to play that part. So make haste if you want to be considered.”
