Fix Your Gravatar

Do you see this handsome guy above? That’s me, Fandango. Well, he’s actually my Gravatar. My what? My Gravatar. What is a Gravatar, you ask? Great question. A Gravatar is an image and public profile that follows you from site to site when you do things like comment or post on a blog.

Most of you have one. You probably created it when you first set up your blog. It shows up on your site. It shows up in the WordPress Reader, too.Do you see all those little images to the left of each notification in my Reader? Those are your Gravatars. If your Gravatar is correctly linked to your blog, when someone clicks on your Gravatar, it will magically transport them to your blog.

But if you have changed the address (URL) of your blog, or started a new blog since you first started blogging on WordPress and you didn’t also update your Gravatar’s link to your new blog address or to your new blog, clicking on that Gravatar will not link anyone to your current blog. It may lead them to a deleted blog, an inactive blog, or to one you haven’t used in years. And that can be very frustrating to a reader who is looking for you.

The good news is that it’s easy to make sure your Gravatar is pointing to your current blog. Just go to your profile, check the “Profile links,” and verify that it’s pointing to the correct blog. You’re welcome.

I’m a frequent gravatar changer. It’s due for another change soon just because I get bored with the old one.

I always just assumed that mine was okay, but when I went in it sais “no sites linked”. I had to link my blog.

Uh, I had no idea so THANK YOU! I’ve now fixed mine and it will presumably lead the clicker to my site. How embarrassing! Personally, I get a different reaction to clicking on an unlinked Gravatar – I’m taken to the Gravatar site (I guess that’s what it is) where it shows me a larger version of the profile picture and tells me the thing is a gravatar. Weird, huh? O_o
