The Big Lie

One aspect of the fallout from the Trump administration is that there exists an ongoing threat to the safety and security of the United States. This is due to the “Big Lie” promoted by Donald Trump and reinforced by a number of powerful, complicit Republicans in Congress, many of whom still claim that this situation we’re in is serendipity, rather than as a result of a deliberate campaign of lies and misinformation designed to incite violent, domestic, Trump-supporting, right-wing extremists. These MAGA-maniacs are now threatening to blow up the Capitol building when Joe Biden is expected to give the State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress and to kill as many members of Congress as possible.

Any astute, bipartisan observer should be able to read the calligraphy on the wall. The Republicans need to immediately disavow Trumpism and distance themselves from the former president or our nation will not survive.

What the Republicans should do and what they will do mostly seem to be poles apart, it’s hard to decide what percentage of them are completely barking mad, and what percentage are completely brainwashed and what percentage are just scared to death of what their supporters would do if they dared to distance themselves from Trump and his lie that the election was stolen.

Mad, brainwashed, or scared, none of those is a good excuse for how they are behaving.

None of these are an excuse for the way they are behaving but they are the only possible explanation I can imagine for why they haven’t dropped Trump like a toxic hot potato. To an outsider from the UK the actions of Mr Trump and the Republican party members are almost beyond belief.

Most of the Republicans are too chicken to say anything that goes against him.

I saw that, too. I don’t get him, or them, either. The only interpretations of what they do that seem rational based upon observation are 1) fear along the lines that either somebody has “something” or some things “on” them or is threatening them or their families or 2) that some of them actually are trying to take our country down. It could also be both, that some or one or two are trying to take the country down and more are being threatened. Someone like Mitch already has so much money that losing the seat shouldn’t be much of a real problem. I mean, otherwise, or, again, too, it might be just a maniacal wish for power or being in the public light. The ordinary wish to win in politics doesn’t fit the picture; it’s an extreme low, in the sense of personal integrity and lack of care for the country and people. But I don’t think they are hurting their chances of winning in red states. Those voters — or, in the case of some, non-or-hedging-voters who still are apologists for Trump and other dingalings — are mental goners following down the lane of the lost. What I see that had a possibility to get us anywhere better, I think, is legal convictions.
