I Can’t Believe This is Actually Happening

A coup inspired and promoted by Donald Trump, the sitting President of the United States, is taking place right before our eyes. Trump supporters have breached the Capitol building. The U.S. Senate chamber has been evacuated. There is chaos in the House chamber and the National Guard is being summoned to clear the protesters from the Capitol building.

And Donald Trump is fiddling while Washington burns and our American democracy dies.

No, I’m not dealing with this well, either. Protesters have taken over the Senate floor.

I think they should send in helicopters with spray and knock them off the building. If he can spray protesters for a photo op we should retaliate likewise. Trump needs to get out there and stop this, instead he encourages it. The world is laughing at us

Fiddling? He’s lighting the damn fires. My contempt for him, and his supports, has become absolute. I don’t know how the US recovers from this.

I think I need to – long day at work today – another long day ahead tomorrow.
But what you wrote about sounds completely bizarre. We were worried people would get violent after the election in November, they seem to have kept the violence on ice?

In what could be interpreted as an attempt to stoke the flames of a Capitol mob which has begun to disperse, President Trump sent a tweet at around 6 p.m. in which he reiterated the false claim that the election was stolen and encouraged his supporters to “remember this day” going forward.

“These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long,” he tweeted. “Go home with love & in peace. Remember this day forever!”

Twitter later took down the tweet, saying that it had violated the company’s rules.

Mr. Trump also posted a video in which he repeated his baseless claims of widespread election fraud on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. All three social media sites removed the video.

By Associated Press, Wire Service Content Jan. 4, 2021, at 7:42 p.m.

Trump has repeatedly encouraged this week’s protests and hinted that he may get personally involved. Over the weekend, he retweeted a promotion for the rally with the message, “I will be there. Historic Day!”

At a November rally, which drew about 15,000 people, Trump staged a limousine drive-by past cheering crowds in Freedom Plaza, on the city’s iconic Pennsylvania Avenue. And at the December rally, which drew smaller numbers but a larger contingent of Proud Boys, Trump’s helicopter flew low over cheering crowds on the National Mall.

The protests coincide with Wednesday’s congressional vote expected to certify the Electoral College results, which Trump continues to dispute…

According to a U.S. defense official, [Mayor Muriel] Bowser put in a request on New Year’s Eve to have Guard members on the streets from Tuesday to Thursday to help with the protests. The official said the additional forces will be used for traffic control and other assistance but they will not be armed or wearing body armor. Congress is meeting this week to certify the Electoral College results, and Trump has refused to concede while whipping up support for protests.

Some 340 D.C. National Guard members will be activated, with about 115 on duty in the streets at any given time, said the defense official, who provided details on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations. The official said Guard members will be used to set up traffic control points around the city and to stand with district police officers at all the city’s Metro stops. [D.C. Acting Police Chief Robert] Contee said Guard troops will also be used for some crowd management.

“Some of our intelligence certainly suggests there will be increased crowd sizes,” said Contee.

D.C. police have posted signs throughout downtown warning that carrying any sort of firearm is illegal and Contee asked area residents to warn authorities of anyone who might be armed.

Because D.C. does not have a governor, the designated commander of the city’s National Guard is Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy. Any D.C. requests for Guard deployments have to be approved by him.

The defense official said that there will be no active duty military troops in the city, and the U.S. military will not be providing any aircraft or intelligence. The D.C. Guard will provide specialized teams that will be prepared to respond to any chemical or biological incident. But the official said there will be no D.C. Guard members on the National Mall or at the U.S. Capitol.

Organizers plan to rally on Tuesday evening at Freedom Plaza and again all day Wednesday on the Ellipse, including a 1 p.m. Wednesday march to the Capitol. Expected attendees include high-level Trump supporters like Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and Republican strategist Roger Stone, a longtime Trump devotee whose three-year prison sentence was commuted by Trump. Stone was convicted of repeatedly lying to Congress during the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Bowser addressed a letter to acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen, Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy and acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, in which she requested that officials notify the city and its police department if federal authorities are deployed.

The mayor said federal officials did not provide this notification to the city’s Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) during events last year.

The Army activates the D.C. National Guard.

The Army activated the entire D.C. National Guard, 1,100 troops, an Army official said Wednesday, and Virginia’s governor dispatched members of the Virginia Guard along with 200 Virginia State Troopers to quell the violence in the nation’s capital.

The troops are being sent to the D.C. Armory, to be deployed to the Capitol and to other points around Washington.

The decision, by Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy and acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller, comes as pro-Trump protesters have overwhelmed Capitol Police and prompted a curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in Washington.

Pentagon officials have been loathe to have uniformed National Guard units deploy to the Capitol, preferring to put the Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police out in front….

A column of F.B.I. and Department of Homeland Security agents in riot gear entered the Dirksen Senate Office Building around 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday…

The F.B.I. had previously considered sending officers to patrol Washington streets in the wake of protests last June, but ultimately decided not to deploy the agents for the planned rally.

“The F.B.I. has been deployed to assist our U.S. Capitol Police partners, as requested, in protection of federal property and public safety,” the F.B.I. statement said.

The F.B.I. would not say how many of its agents were deployed to the Capitol. But a former government official said that earlier on Wednesday all F.B.I. agents in the Washington region were alerted that they could be called to Downtown Washington.

Chris Miller, the acting secretary of defense, also pledged support, saying he had spoken to Vice President Mike Pence and congressional leaders and has “fully activated the D.C. National Guard to assist federal and local law enforcement as they work to peacefully address the situation.”

He continued, “Our people are sworn to defend the Constitution and our democratic form of government and they will act accordingly.”

From the couple days before today at a paper in the city where Hawley went to prep school:

“We are absolutely and unapologetically anti-fascists. We are perplexed that someone would use that in the pejorative and we certainly would hope that Senator Hawley also opposes fascism,” Shutdown DC said on Twitter. “We visited Senator Hawley’s house for around 30 minutes. We sang songs, chanted and shared our stories. A small group of people delivered a copy of the constitution to his door (with Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution dog eared for easy reference).”

Hawley… was the first senator to announce his intention to oppose certification, a move that has little chance of reversing President Donald Trump’s defeat.

        {It’s a move, additionally, however, that enables further steps for any “statement” by a representative in the House (and the two-hour delays) against certification.}

Protests outside politicians’ homes are commonplace. …

Right-wing sites, such as Gateway Pundit and the Daily Caller, posted stories affirming Hawley’s description of a dangerous mob outside his home. However, reports by … local TV contrasted Hawley’s account with comments … and descriptions of the video.

        { The right-wing sites were slanderous. }

It is theoretical, only theoretical, that the President can’t be arrested. The opinion was published by the DOJ during the Nixon administration… when we had a common crook as vice president and a political and tax crook for president… and there was the need to carefully encourage Vice President Agnew to resign before president Nixon would be notified he should. No one with knowledge wanted Agnew to become the president (with the resignation or removal of Nixon), even though it would have been much easier to carry out what was needed had the vice president in place been fit for office. It wasn’t until Agnew was replaced with Ford that other Republicans told the person they had elected for the highest office he had to go or that he would otherwise be impeached. If a person, even President, is dangerous enough… he would need to be arrested. We can’t just be completely exposed to evil.

I think I have gone through every emotion possible and back again since Wednesday afternoon. This kind of thing just doesn’t happen in the US. A part of me just wants to sleep until the 21st so it will be done. But I still keep turning on the news expecting good news… it hasn’t been there. I am glad they are finding and charging many of those who broke into the Capitol. I just heard on the 10 o’clock news that the person identified as from Iowa has now lost his job. I hope there is justice for those who tried to break our democracy.
