Who Won the Week? 01/03/2021

FWWTWThe idea behind Who Won the Week is for you to select who (or what) you think “won” this past week. Your selection can be anyone or anything — politicians, celebrities, athletes, authors, bloggers, your friends or family members, books, movies, TV shows, businesses, organizations, whatever.

I will be posting this prompt on Sunday mornings (my time). If you want to participate, write your own post designating who you think won the week and why you think they deserve your nod. Then link back to this post and tag you post with FWWTW.

Just about everybody agrees that 2020 was a terrible year.But 2020 is finally behind us and as we turn the calendars page to 2021, most people are feeling a sense of relief that the worst year in our lifetimes is over. But even more than relief, 2021 is offering us a sense of hope. Hope that we’ll see the end to this pandemic that has been crippling us for the past year. Hope that some degree of normalcy will return to our lives. Hope that we will put aside the differences that have divided us and come together for the sake of humankind.

And so, I am designating hope as this week’s Who Won the Week winner.

    My answer is Mitch McConnell. He blocked upping the stimulus checks to $2000, stating that there’s “no realistic path to quickly pass the Senate,” as if the pandemic doesn’t even exist. And the most he’ll likely receive in return is some spray-paint to one of his homes. Then he has the audacity to call the vandalism a “radical tantrum” as if demanding our government work for us and give us the money we need is akin to having a fit from a petulant child. It really shows that McConnell can get away with pretty much anything and suffer no consequences. And, despite his age and lack of popularity, he’ll probably be with us for another decade or two.

    Hopefully 2021 will be better, but the structural issues that made 2020 a nightmare are not going away. And we’re going to feel a lot of the consequences of last year ripple through this year and for who knows how long.

      Your right. It’s going to take a while to wash away the excrement of 2020. I’m afraid that Trump and his fans will not go quietly into the night.

        Trump’s Crackpot Phone Call

        Trump alternately berated Raffensperger, tried to flatter him, begged him to act and threatened him with vague criminal consequences if the secretary of state refused to pursue his false claims, at one point warning that Raffensperger was taking “a big risk.”

        Throughout the call, Raffensperger and his office’s general counsel rejected his assertions, explaining that Trump is relying on debunked conspiracy theories and that President-elect Joe Biden’s 11,779-vote victory in Georgia was fair and accurate.

        “The people of Georgia are angry, the people in the country are angry,” he said. “And there’s nothing wrong with saying, you know, um, that you’ve recalculated.”

        Raffensperger responded: “Well, Mr. President, the challenge that you have is, the data you have is wrong.”

        At another point, Trump said: “So look. All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state.”
