Thursday Inspiration — Blueberry Pancakes

“That was a great breakfast, Hon,” Dave said. “I can’t remember the last time you made us pancakes, much less blueberry pancakes.”

“I know those are your favorites and I thought you might enjoy a treat on Christmas Eve morning,” Liz said, a big smile on her face. She stood up and grabbed the breakfast plates from the table and headed toward the kitchen sink. Suddenly Liz shrieked and the two plates hit the floor and shattered.

Dave jumped to his feet and ran over to Liz. “Honey, what’s wrong?” he asked.

Still shaking, Liz said, “We have a mouse living in our house, Dave. I just saw it scurry across our kitchen floor and squeeze behind the refrigerator. You need to get it out of my house.”

Dave groaned as he positioned himself in front of the refrigerator. He put a hand on each side and began to maneuver it from side to side to pull it out from the nook it was in. After a few minutes of effort, Dave had the refrigerator far enough from the wall to look behind it.

“Holy shit!” he exclaimed. “Liz, come look at this!”

Liz peeked behind the refrigerator and saw a nest of newborn mice, gray, hairless, and with their eyes not yet open. The mouse that had scurried across the kitchen floor was standing in front of her babies, ready to protect her brood. “Aw, Dave,” she said, her eyes tearing up. “They’re so cute. I can’t let you kill them.”

“So what do you want me to do?” Dave asked. “Should I call an exterminator?”

“Oh God no, Dave,” Liz said. “This is the miracle of life. We should rejoice for the mother mouse and her babies, not destroy them. I want you to go to the pet store and find an aquarium or some other suitable habitat for this little family of mice.”

“Are you serious, Liz?” Dave asked. “You want to keep these mice as pets? These aren’t little baubles to hang on the tree. They’re living creatures.”

“I know , Dave, and yes I do want to keep them as pets,” Liz said. “After all, it is Christmas tomorrow. What would Jesus do?”

“But….” Dave was interrupted when he heard Liz calling him. “Wake up sleepyhead,” she said. “I made you blueberry pancakes for breakfast. They’re your favorites.”

    Wild mice can be kept as pets, same as any tame mouse you buy in a pet store, but I wouldn’t want any in my house unless I had a pet snake.

      Back when I was in college I had a pet snake and I would feed him mice that I got at the pet store. The snake would swallow the mouse whole and I’d watch the mouse slowly work it’s way down the snake’s body.

    Cute! My cat actually brought in a baby rat (thought it was a mouse at the time…barely any fur, eyes still closed) and left it under the bed. He wasn’t injured and I knew he would die if I put him outside. So, I syringe fed him baby formula all day and night, and he grew into a lovely rat who loved almonds, and neck scratches…he’d close his eyes and tilt back his head. His name was Marley. Hubby built him a huge enclosure and we even adopted a rat friend for him! Sadly, Marley suddenly passed away after only 6 months, but it was longer than he would have lived otherwise 🙂

      I think there are very few people who would syringe-feed a baby rat much less buy a companion rat to keep it company. Good for you!

        Thank you, Fandango. We still have his rat friend, Simba. Such a sweetheart! Apparently, rats are similar to dogs…they just get a bad rap
