I was hoping for a landslide victory for Joe Biden. Although it wasn’t a landslide, Biden did win both the popular vote and the Electoral College, so I was still filled with delight when the networks declared Biden to be the president-elect.
Unfortunately, with his obsession over not being labeled a loser, Trump refuses to concede defeat and the White House has directed his departments to not cooperate with the Biden transition team, thus denying them access to the daily intelligence briefings, which puts our national security at risk.
In addition, Trump has instructed his Cabinet heads to prepare their budgets for next year, which must be presented to Congress in February. As if he will still be the president at that time.
Clearly this covfefe-brained lunatic is trying, with no deft whatsoever, to subvert the will of the American people and to refuse to accept the results of the election. And the silence or support from the Republicans in Congress is deafening.
If Trump does not graciously accept the fact that Joe Biden won the election, concede defeat, and enable the peaceful transfer of power to the new administration, as every other president in the history of our nation has done, the man should immediately be removed from office, forcibly if necessary. If not, he will continue to disable and destroy the United States.

I don’t know what was up with that photo of Trump but he looks like a small child saying “I’ll hold my breath.” because he’s not getting his own way. Anyway, if he’s not gone by January 20 won’t it be fun to see him marched out the door by security, hopefully on national television?

I thought, upon glancing at that photo, that he looks precisely like a small child. One who is in the process of messing his pants. Not far off the mark perhaps!

He doesn’t have to concede, that’s the main thing. The inauguration can take place in January and he doesn’t have to be there. It might be a painful and rocky transition, but he is on the way out and so far, none of the courts are bowing to his lawsuits. Hold on tight and it will hopefully all be over soon!

He’s worse than a petulant child, and that picture proves it. IMO, he is an embarrassment to the country, his family, and himself but is too arrogant and ignorant to see it. Is there a Naughty Step in The White House?

He has also not authorized the certification of the vote, as is required before the president-elect can have access to spaces and materials needed for the transition.

It’s all been said. No more to say. He’s a dangerous, crazy petulant child. A disgrace that such a person should be in such a position. Please, Jan. 20. Come soon.

OK I don’t really understand US politics. How come some TV station or group of news outlets declare a winner? Isn’t there an official electoral body who does that? I can understand that the loser has to concede defeat and make a statement either in person or writing.
I hope the next photo you post of the orange buffoon that his face is blue

I have been following along with the ABC election blog and a lot of people ask that question. It’s so different from the way we do it in Australia. The US media outlets (and Aunty ABC) called the election for Biden but it is only official after all the votes have been counted and recounted and whatever other legal stuff has to happen. Then each state Governor certifies the results. After that they have the electoral college vote. There are some good articles on aunty’s website that explain it although I’m sure our US friends will be glad to. So basically the fat lady hasn’t sung yet but barring something extraordinary this is the beginning of the end for President Grumpy.

Yes, it’s true. But they delight in making our government less and less democratic; less representative of the people.

The candidate who wins 270 Electoral College votes wins the election. It’s based upon the popular vote in each state and for most states, whichever candidate earns the most popular votes wins ALL of that state’s electoral votes. It’s basically a winner takes all approach. It’s also an antiquated system that should be abandoned, but because it’s documented in the U.S. Constitution, it would take a constitutional amendment to remove the Electoral College.
Anyway, when it becomes apparent that one candidate has won the popular vote in a state, the media outlets award that state’s electoral votes to the winning candidate. In 2016, Hillary Clinton had 3 million more votes nationwide than Trump, but Trump won in more states, so he won the Electoral College vote. This year, Biden has, so far, 5 million more votes than Trump and also has more than 270 Electoral College votes, so he has been declared the winner. But technically, the Electoral College vote takes place on December 14th. Never in the history of the country have the “electors” of the Electoral College not voted to certify the candidate who won on Election Day. It’s a fucked up process, for sure.

Who makes up the Electoral College?

First, the political parties in each State choose slates of potential electors sometime before the general election. Second, during the general election, the voters in each State select their State’s electors by casting their ballots. The electors from the party of the candidate who wins the popular vote in that state then vote on December 14th.

I wonder how that’s supposed to work when the “founding fathers” (or some of them) supposedly didn’t like the idea of parties (or political factions). I suppose each candidate would choose slates of electors…. before the election. I suppose I need to review my Constitution. Guessing, ahead, though, it might use the word(s) parties/party, but mean it more like participants in a contract or lawsuit. The Constitution isn’t very long. But I don’t feel like looking, today.

Do those electors ever not vote for the popular vote winner? If not, what’s the point? Sorry if I am being too much

I know you’re asking Fandango rather than me, but I’m going to take a shot at it anyway (and hope that’s okay). Fandango indicated the electors have never voted other than in the way they were expected to do (for the candidate that got the majority of votes from individual voters within each specific estate). Theoretically, they could vote differently (so long as the laws within the individual state don’t explicitly tell them they can’t); each state is in charge of their own process. Some of us were hoping, in 2016, that electors who had been selected would break from the usual and cast their votes, in any state that had gone majority Republican/Trump, for some other a Republican who wasn’t insane (or who wasn’t observably neo-Nazi or racist or whatever). The idea, long before that election cycle, was that it’s considered a fail-safe that the electors aren’t totally obligated. Since it’s never been tried, however, we don’t really know how things would come out if the matter were taken to court. I also don’t know, since the situation is now dominated by Republicans and Democrats, even if our “founders” didn’t want that to be the case, whether or not said “political parties” have any would-be elector sign an agreement that they will personally commit to voting for the named candidate (in other words… taking that on even though the Constitution doesn’t require it). I think a lot goes on that most of us wouldn’t dream is part of the picture.

Thanks for your explanation. Having to change the Constitution would be a nightmare. I am part of a community group and had to redo our constitution and it took a few years!!
Is there only 2 parties the Republicans and Democrats?

Only two “major” parties. There are a few smaller ones, like the Libertarian Party and the Green Party, but they play a minimal role.

They are supposed to vote for the popular winner, and I think they almost always have. That’s normal, but 2020 is anything but normal.

I read that it didn’t happen s few times in the past and Hilary was the popular elected by 3 million votes but didn’t win the college vote

Yes, but that was because Trump won more states and most states are “wii er take all” in terms of electoral votes. Unfortunately, the Electoral College trumps the popular vote in the U.S.

There are more “political parties” than the two dominant ones. However, anyone who gets elected (even if they are elected on a party ticket as an Indepebdent or Green or Libertarian or anything else) ends up “caucusing” — now I’m talking about the house of Representativesand the Senate — with one of the dominants (R or D). Candidates have run fit President bit on a ticket of Republican or Democrat. But they haven’t gotten a large percentage of votes.

BUSHBOY queried, quote: I read that it didn’t happen [a] few times in the past and Hilary was the popular elected by 3 million votes but didn’t win …
Fandango explained, earlier, quote: The electors from the party of the candidate who wins the popular vote in that state then vote on December 14th.
Me now: Hillary won the popular vote of the whole nation. Yet, we don’t go by the aggregate of all the individual voters in the nation. We add up electoral college votes from each specific state (the states, by the way, don’t have equal electoral college electors). The number of electors voting for the electoral college in the state (fifty different states) get added to that total: aiming for at least 270. Generally, all of the electors for the state reflect the popular vote of that state (not of the nation).
{There are two states (I believe only two) that assign their electors and apportion to different areas. I know this sounds all the more complicated. An example is that an area of Nebraska has one individual elector to reflect the majority vote in their area; I don’t remember how many electors are assigned to the rest of that state.}

They don’t declare the winner. They take the results from the States and project who the President Elect is.. It’s not binding and we all know that- but for some reason have chosen to forget it in this cycle.
Here’s an article explaining the process: https://www.britannica.com/story/how-does-the-electoral-college-work

This article didn’t originate at this site, but I heard of this article today. I then searched… and entertainingly found an odd site, which had reposted it (or “posted” it rather than having published it). Many Trump apologists are basically “anarchists” (libertarians in their version or just loonies without meaning), often without knowing it, but for ill (as opposed to many people who imagine anarchy being for good). I’m not an anarchist, in that I’m a realist. But some of the other articles I noticed look like they might be good brain and heart exercise.
We have had a few catastrophic transitions in the past. After the 1860 election, seven states seceded from the union rather than endure under President Abraham Lincoln, who had to sneak into Washington with armed guards for the inaugural to avoid assassination plots. The 1876 election between Samuel Tilden and Rutherford B. Hayes wasn’t decided until just a couple of days before the term began, with an election commission flipping three states to Hayes in exchange for his agreement to remove federal troops from the South, ushering in nearly a 100 years of Jim Crow.
That’s only a couple — rather than “a few” — examples. We can see it’s the jerkiest people this time, too.

By the way (for anyone interested such as yourself), there’s a page at the New York Times showing which states have certified (after collecting all the returns from their various counties) or not SO FAR: “2020 election certification tracker” is in the address line.
