One-Liner Wednesday — Herd Immunity

“Never in the history of public health has herd immunity been used as a strategy for responding to an outbreak.”

The head of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus

Despite the fact that top infectious-disease experts around the world, including the head of the WHO, say the idea of a herd immunity strategy for combating COVID-19 is unworkable and far too dangerous, proponents pushing to allow the coronavirus to circulate freely among healthy young people until herd immunity is reached have found a receptive audience inside the Trump White House.

Donald Trump is killing America. Literally.

Written for Linda G. Hill’s One-Liner Wednesday prompt.

He is not alone, Boris Johnson is doing the same.

It kills most those he doesn’t want around. He doesn’t see it as a bad thing.

Yes lots of blacks and Hispanics…a few old white people that probably don’t even vote. He couldn’t care less who dies other than himself

Exactly. It breaks my heart, both to have a “leader” who is like that, and that so many seem to like him.

Back when Donald Trump and some of his followers — or he was their follower in a way — were against or wary of immunizations, it was being explained by normal health professionals that the purpose of vaccines is to achieve herd immunity SO THAT A DISEASE DOESN’T SPREAD [measles, for example, or polio or diphtheria] generally and to people* with weak immune systems (or allergies, etc.). But NOW he and his followers are rationalizing SPREADING this new disease. Survival of the fittest. At the same time, they are trusting Trump, someone who knows nothing about health and science, to determine that a new vaccine will be safe and good in a rush.

    * (even with a basically good vaccine, some people shouldn’t take it)

I don’t think Trump cares that herd immunity would require about 200 million Americans to contract and recover from Covid, not counting the horrible number of people that would die in addition to those who have already lost their lives. Trump has an evil, wicked and dumb soul which has led us to our current situation, so it doesn’t surprise me that he would suggest herd immunity.

There was a news article here the other day about somebody catching it twice, but as far as I know, these are just reposts. All the same, I wouldn’t be putting my money on anything “herd” yet. My understanding is that nothing is confirmed, either way.

Yes, a 25 year old kid in Colorado (I think) had COVID-19, recovered, and then contested it a second time and it was worse than the first time he had it.

One of the theories I heard was that the virus had mutated. Because we were all wondering why our second wave (which, looking back, looks like it started in September) seemed to be less deadly than the first. So maybe there are multiple strains knocking around? Catching one does not make us immune to the others?

France just reinstated curfew from 9 pm to 6 am at least in Paris and other high risk regions
