For today’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt, Linda G. Hill has asked us to write a post using the word “medium.”
The first thing that popped into my head was the way I like my steaks and burgers prepared: medium rare. However, I prefer my eggs to be over easy, not over medium.
But what may be of more interest to you, my fellow WordPress bloggers, than how I like my steak or eggs prepared, is that I’ve been playing around with the blog hosting site, Medium.I downloaded the Medium app for the iPhone, and I created an account there. I haven’t yet published a post on Medium, but I am trying to get to know it.
I’m examining Medium because WordPress is bound and determined to make us all use it’s goddam block editor whether we want to or not. And for me, it’s a solid “not.”
What do I think of Medium so far? Well, I just downloaded the app yesterday, so it’s way too early to form an opinion. That said, my first impression is that Medium is a platform for writers, not for publishers, which seems to be what WordPress wants to become.
When you create a post on Medium, you get a blank screen, like a simple word processing screen. It’s sort of the way the beloved classic editor in WordPress used to be. There are no myriad blocks you have to figure out how to use. You just start typing your post and nothing complicated gets in your way.
So, no, I’m not yet ready to leave WordPress or to migrate my blog to Medium, but I am going to keep my options open. Because I hate the block editor almost as much as I hate Donald Trump, I’m going to continue to explore Medium as a possible alternative to WordPress. And if I like it, I may just give it a go.
But don’t worry. I’ll give you plenty of notice if I decide to make the switch from WordPress to Medium.
Options!? Woohoo! This new block editor is a royal PITA. Thanks for alerting me to Medium. I’m also ready for a change, as effortless as possible.

The jury is still out, but it does look promising.

My daughter writes on Medium. I may see what her experience has been. Great stream!

Let me know after you talk with her what she thinks of Medium. I’ve heard mixed reviews.

I also mentioned medium rare and Medium! I didn’t know it was a blog option ~ I thought it was just for serious articles. That’s interesting!

Yeah… I thought it was a “media” outlet or the like.

Medium rare is the only way to go with a top quality steak. I haven’t had one in awhile, so you have my mouth watering.
I’ll be interested to see what you decide with the Medium platform. I’ve been able to post with the block editor, but it’s not very intuitive or user-friendly. Either I’ll end up switching some day or keeping my posts to the very basic abilities of BE.

I will probably write a post and share my views about Medium once I’ve had time to play around with it.

I’ve actually been learning how to use the block editor, but to be honest, the only blocks I use are image and classic! 😂 So this is still another case of, “Why needlessly change stuff so much that you alienate your base?”
And, wow, you must REALLY hate the block editor, then!

Yes I do really hate the block editor, but that’s because I blog exclusively on the iPhone and the block editor just doesn’t work well on a small screen.

I can’t think of anything I hate as much as tRump. If I can’t blog my life will be OK. If tRump is reelected our entire country will be destroyed.

That’s why he must not be re-elected.

I’ve not heard of medium. It will be interesting to hear about it. I think I have read a few blogs from there. Never thought about using it. Please keep us posted.

I’ve been urged by a bunch of people to try Medium. I think I have an account which I haven’t used, but they’ve greatly changed the site since i first checked it out about a year ago. Let me know what you think.
I can’t stay here. It’s a pity because I’ve put so much into it, but they are making working here so unpleasant. The problem is that Medium is or seems to be a more formal structure. They want serious writing and I don’t always want to be serious. A lot of the time, I just want to have fun with words. More play than work. I really don’t WANT to work at my writing. I did that for 40+ years.
I’m retired. I want to stay retired. But I’d like to get more opinions before I decide.

Yikes, always well done for me. Kept us posted on Medium as I had no imtension of any kind of publishing.

This is news to me. I didn’t know Medium offered options, I thought it was a media source of some type. It’s hard to imagine leaving WordPress after 5 years and all the work I put in but I really REALLY hate the block editor…

I’ll need to spend some serious time getting to know Medium before I decide, one way or the other about leaving WordPress.

I checked it out; interesting, short articles but only three “free” articles per month. Subscription needed for more options.

I didn’t realize that. That’s a bummer.

I like Medium and there are writers of all types on there. Thousands of “serious” articles but thousands of creative writing pieces as well.
