Welcome once again to Fandango’s Provocative Question. Each week I will pose what I think is a provocative question for your consideration.
By provocative, I don’t mean a question that will cause annoyance or anger. Nor do I mean a question intended to arouse sexual desire or interest.
What I do mean is a question that is likely to get you to think, to be creative, and to provoke a response. Hopefully a positive response.
This week’s provocative question is about blog awards.
You know the drill, right? Someone nominates you for an award and, as part of the “rules” to accept that nomination, you are asked to nominate, say, 10 other bloggers. Each of those 10 bloggers that you nominated must, themselves, nominate 10 more. So just twice removed from your blog being nominated, 100 other blogs (10 x 10) will have been nominated. If each of those 100 bloggers follows the rules and nominates another 10 blogs, just three degrees of separation from you having received a nomination, another 1,000 will have received one (100 x 10).
And then 10,000. And then 100,000. By the time you reach Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, one million blogs will have been nominated. Those million nominations will beget 10 million. And those 10 million will beget 100 million. ONE HUNDRED MILLION BLOG AWARD NOMINATIONS!
These 100 million nominations can potentially be generated in just eight iterations down an unbroken chain from the one blog award nomination you received if everyone pays it forward as instructed.
And that’s just one blog award. Think about how many different kinds of blog awards there are floating around the blogosphere!
So, now that we’ve gone through the mathematics of blog awards, my provocative question is simply this.
How do you feel of blog awards? Why do you feel that way?

When I started blogging, in my naivety, I thought one had to be really good at what one blogs about and popular to get an award! Soon I realised it was not so! I am wiser now. 😄

The whole award/nomination/badge side to it is meh! However, I like to do them because it gives me some inspiration for topics to write about and I have chance to put together a very pretty colourful post. I like that. When I receive a nomination it takes me ages to put together a post. I normally schedule them to be published on a Saturday. Maybe people have a little more time to read longer posts at the weekend?

I know what you’re saying and I don’t entirely disagree. However, I don’t think it’s all that terrible to receive a little outside validation. I think these trails of nominations drop off, so we never actually get to the 10 million mark, but your point is well taken. I received one nomination one time, and thanked the person who nominated me. Then I nominated ten others, only to have one respond. I think it peters out pretty quickly. Good question, though.

I got one once. I mean, I knew it wasn’t anything actually “real” but I thought it would be a cool way to connect with other people. Boy was I wrong. People were not amused 😳. I didn’t actually expect people to nominate a bunch of other people. I just like to answer questions about myself and see other people answer mine. Yeeaaah…. Never gonna do that again.

I did a couple when I was a newbie blogger but I never really liked having to nominate others who might not want to do the challenge. It does seem a lot like chain letters to me but fortunately without the threats that often used to accompany those. “Don’t break the chain or something bad will happen.” I don’t get nominated much but if I do and if I decide to answer the questions I don’t nominate any others but just invite anyone who wants to to join in.

I was more apt to do the whole rules early on, but now I just let whoever wants to answer have at it. I do enjoy most of the questions asked in the awards. But especially after your math, they are kind of like chain letters. And considering how many different ones there are, don’t you imagine everyone would eventually get every award?

Yes, I think everyone will get an award and probably multiple awards, given how many there are.
