Five Things — Favorite Burgers

Five Things

Dr. Tanya has this prompt called “5 Things,” where she asks us to list five things about a particular topic. Her latest topic is our five favorite burgers.

Let me start out by saying that I love hamburgers. Most of the hamburgers I eat are made from beef. I have also had bison (buffalo) burgers, turkey burgers, and even an Impossible burger, which is basically a veggie burger designed to mimic the taste of beef, which it doesn’t.

In any event, since 99% of the burgers I consume are beef, I’m going to focus on beef burgers. Is that okay with you? My response is essentially a variation on a theme, or the five favorite ways I like my burgers dressed.

And I will also preface my list of favorites by saying that my burgers must be cooked no more than medium rare, at the most. A burger that is medium well or well done is nothing short of an abomination.

Finally, cheese is a requirement. I prefer Swiss cheese, but cheddar is an acceptable alternative. Now let’s get down to business.

Basic cheeseburger: medium rare with Swiss cheese and lettuce and tomato.

Bacon cheeseburger: as above but with a couple of strips of crispy bacon added.

Mushroom cheeseburger: your basic cheeseburger but with sautéed mushrooms and, optionally, sautéed onions instead of lettuce and tomato.

Barbecue cheeseburger: your basic cheeseburger but with barbecue sauce added. May include sautéed mushrooms and onions as well.

California cheeseburger: your basic cheeseburger garnished with slices of avocado — or a generous dollop of guacamole — and, optionally, bacon and onions.California burger

Also was meh on the Impossible. Would rather have a portobello!

Oh yeah, I forgot that I’ve had portobello burgers a couple of times. They’re actually pretty good.

I have two outstanding memories with burgers. One involved a famous (and comparatively large sit-down) burger restaurant in San Diego. First time I’d had a California burger — or avocado at all. Yum. I don’t know how I knew to order it — possibly mainly because of the name. I was a fan of California generally. Plus, I’ve always enjoyed trying new things (and I read the menu), whether I end up liking the new thing or not. And perhaps the server made a recommendation.

Oh. I was something like twelve during that trip to San Diego and other cities in the state and other states on the way — one of a few trips to California as a child before I moved there as an adult.

The other memory is of being “babysat” when I was maybe nine. For some reason, a woman who had taken care of me as a baby and toddler was the person my mom found on this one day. (Otherwise, I had teenage sitters.) She liked using fatty beef; I ate two, and asked for more, burgers.

Well, that reminds me of another occasion of sorts. Not everyone likes them, but I was five years old and ate six White Castle burgers.

Six burgers when you were five? I don’t think I could eat six White Castle burgers at one sitting even today.

I don’t think I would now, but I think I could. I’ll usually eat two steak burgers from Omaha Steaks. And I think there’s an equal amount or more meat in one of those than in six of the other. There is more fat in a White Castle than I want to deal with these days. Also, I tend not to eat a lot of bread. I’ll often eat a steak burger with only pickles and fresh tomato. I like Grillo’s Pickles “dill chips.”

I remember, too, my first time to a Burger King, and what the place looked like (and that it was across the street from a Korvettes Department Store). I went with a friend on her birthday; she had a birthday party there, and then we all went to a movie. (I don’t remember what film.)

One you didn’t mention that I like on occasion is brat burgers with a little bbq sauce.
