FPQWelcome once again to Fandango’s Provocative Question. Each week I will pose what I think is a provocative question for your consideration.

By provocative, I don’t mean a question that will cause annoyance or anger. Nor do I mean a question intended to arouse sexual desire or interest.

What I do mean is a question that is likely to get you to think, to be creative, and to provoke a response. Hopefully a positive response.

Today’s provocative question was actually triggered by a comment that Di, over at Pensitivity101, made in one of my posts. She wrote, “I know I’ve said it umpteen times, but casting Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher lost all credibility for me.”

To which comment I responded, “Yeah, that does happen at times when you have read a book and created an image in your mind’s eye of the character. But it’s very off-putting when you see the movie version of the book and the actor who plays the part conflicts with that you envisioned from the book.”

So, my provocative question this week is this:

What movie adaptation of a book you have read before you saw the movie has done the best job when it comes to casting the actor (or actors) in the movie to match your image you had of that character (or those characters) in the book. Conversely, what movie adaptation has done the worst job of matching the casting of the characters to those you envisioned in your head.

    Bogart as Marlowe in The Big Sleep was superbly cast, as was Lauren Bacall as his femme fatale foil. When I imagine those characters I see Bogart and Bacall.

    Conversely, Jack Black as Lemuel Gulliver… I can’t even
    .. 😐

    I found it much easier to think of the worst adaptations than the best, but I’ll take a stab at it!

    Thanks for the nod Fandango. Apart from TC as Jack Reacher, I can only think of a total miscasting for a Jack Higgins book which I can’t remember the title of, nor the actors concerned.
    I have read books after seeing the movie, then seeing the special editions of the movies had more of the book in them, but the characters were already in my head then (Aliens, Dances with Wolves and The Abyss)

    I’m not a fan of watching movie adaptations of favorite books.  The only one I’ve liked in the past was Daphne DuMaurier’s “The Birds”. I have my own imaginings of the way they sound and look and the movie is a disappointment, or they completely change endings.  I feel the same about audible books.  The voices are not what I imagined, and do not care for them, which is too bad for me, because my eyes tire easily.

    I know you are not into these books, but I think the casting of the young characters in the movies was superb for the J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, as well as the timing of the movies, just as the readers grew up with the characters in the books each year, so did the actors in the movies. I read all the series with my daughters; they were younger than the characters, but they also grew up through the series.

    I love Tom Hanks in almost any movie; even in some of his early bad comedies, he is great, but I think his casting for The Da Vinci Code was just wrong.

    Lord of the rings trilogy was in my opinion very well cast while Harry Potter missed the mark but one can give them leeway as it revolves around child actors.
