With her Monday Peeve, Paula Light gives us an opportunity every Monday to vent about something — anything, big or small — that is bothering us. So, today I’m going to vent about the weather.
When we lived in San Francisco, I rarely complained about the weather because, well, the weather was close to perfect. It almost never got above 80º in the summer or below freezing in the winter. On those rare days when temperatures did get hot (and in San Francisco, anything above 75 is considered “hot”) the humidity was still relatively low, so it wasn’t that uncomfortable. Our San Francisco home didn’t have air conditioning. Just a few ceiling fans to keep the air circulating. And when it got “cold” in the winter, it never got cold enough to snow or to even frost over.
But now I live on the East Bay, about 35 miles east of San Francisco. And we are experiencing our fourth straight day of 100+ degree temperatures. On Friday it reached 108. Saturday, 106. Yesterday, 105. And today’s forecast calls for 102.
Are you fucking kidding me? It’s so hot outside that I can’t walk our dog on the street because the pavement is so hot it burns the bottoms of her paws. And I just got a notice on my newsfeed that “rolling blackouts, possibly for millions of people in the Bay Area, are likely in store for Monday and Tuesday as a power shortage exists during this extreme heatwave.”
If there is power outage and my home’s air conditioning shuts down, I, well, I don’t know what I’ll do.

Wowser that’s too hot! I’ve been having to watch the heat for Lucy dog too the last few days. We don’t have air conditioners here in the UK. They never build them into houses here as the weather is usually bearable.

It’s only mid-80s here, but we also received notice of rolling blackouts. Annoying!

In Aliso Viejo, we have had notices of rolling blackouts lasting for an hour. It was suggested that we pre-cool our houses below 78 before 3 pm, then turn the a/c up to 78 at 3 pm to help save energy (sounds counter-productive to me!!!

We finally got a break in the heat after two weeks of 100 degree weather AND we got (are you ready?) — .32 inches of rain. There might be more tonight. Or not.

We had thunder here early Sunday morning and that a rarity. Unfortunately, some of the lightning strikes triggered a bunch of wildfires.

Me, too. Tomorrow it’s only supposed to reach 99 here. I’m gonna have to wear a sweater. 😂

Blimey. Those temps are mind boggling to me. We sometimes get it in the 90s and that is enough for me. Errrm, swimming? Poor doggie. Those hot pavements are a killer. Hope you don’t get the blackouts.

What I’d do in your shoes (and I’m ALMOST in your shoes – Utah is hitting the high 90s-100+s this week) is go on a short family road trip (being judicious about where of course and trying to stay safe) in a rented mobile home/van thingie. Those things, gas hogs true, have great A/C usually. You could take the dog and cat that way too, and no hotel costs. Find a mountain and go to the top where it’s bound to be cooler – I know it’s probably hours away, but isn’t Lake Tahoe within driving distance? Alternatively (and cheaper), get some spray bottles and go about misting yourself frequently. Keep the curtains or blinds closed, and pray for a breeze (just not a Santa Ana…) Good luck my friend. That sounds troublesome!

The RV idea sounds great, but our cat is a real homebody and hates being in a moving vehicle of any kind. Maybe I’ll pull down all of our window shades, get naked, and spray myself with cold water. Yeah, that’s the ticket. By the way, it got to 105 today. 🥵

We have had some days where the heat index is over 100, but the temps were still in the 90s. Do what you can to stay cool. Have you thought about shoes for your dog’s paws so he could walk the pavement without burning his paws… they do make them. I hope things cool off for you soon and those wildfires get under control fast.
