Sunday Writing Prompt — The “Lockdown”

Coronavirus in AmericaMy dear fellow Americans (and citizens of the world),

It’s time we had a serious conversation about coronavirus, Covid-19, or, as our asshole, racist president calls it, “the China virus.”

It has come to my attention that some of you apparently believe it’s a hoax and that the press and even the public health experts are using scare tactics to take away your freedom and liberty to be as stupid and selfish as you want to be. You question the efficacy of practicing social distancing and of wearing face masks when outside of your home, and make lame excuses for refusing to do so. You have even turned such practices into political issues.

Don’t you understand that social distancing and wearing of face masks are designed to aid in controlling and reducing the spread of this highly contagious disease that has infected more than 4.3 million Americans and killed almost 150,000? And, regardless of your age, gender, or state of health, you are not immune.

There’s an old expression: an ounce of protection is worth a pound of cure. Don’t be a selfish, ignorant asshole like Donald Trump. For your own safety, and for the safety of those you know and love, stay at home whenever possible. And when you do go somewhere, wear a mask and practice social distancing. Doing so won’t harm or kill you and those you care about. Contracting COVID-19 may.

    Our local news posted a photo of a long line up to get into a downtown bar Friday night. It’s maddening to think that if these covidiots keep this up we are going to have a second wave in the fall.

    You are right of course, but I worry at the other end of the scale – that somebody will put any old rag over their mouth and consider themselves safe. Masks are being sold here as fashion accessories, and I wonder whether people actually understand what a mask’s job is.

    I have not worn a mask yet, because I have not left the house. I still think that’s the best policy.

      I agree. I only leave the house to walk the dog, to go pick up some groceries, and to occasionally visit my son, daughter-in-law and our two-month old grandson.

        I’ve found here that, in general, people are really aware in supermarkets, and the supermarkets themselves have been really aware. An hour a fortnight seems acceptable, although we’re still getting online deliveries where possible. I believe that the supermarkets here have now stopped their 1 in/1 out, and removed the arrows on the floor.

    Sage advice good sir. Like you I am amazed by how many ignorant people there are out there believing the restrictions are just an infringement of their rights. Insane leadership is only making it worse.

    While I definitely agree basically that people should consider the health of those around them and not insist on “my right to” regardless of how it affects others, I hesitate to judge people on sight, because I know some folks can’t wear masks — at least not for any length of time. Being nasty to the people you think are being nasty is thinking two wrongs make a right.

    I wear two behind-the-ear hearing aids, and when I wore a mask the other day, the elastic got tangled up with, and popped out, my hearing aid. Thankfully I caught it in my hand. I just heard of someone who lost their hearing aid that way — think $3000 gone and you’ll realize why a few people don’t wear them. I’ll likely stay home rather than run the risk — or design a suitable mask.

      That may be true for a small number of people, but most who object to wearing face masks do not have hearing aid issues.

        We’re a very small minority. Many people won’t wear masks because they say they have breathing issues. But a person doesnt have to keep it on for long, if they’re in and out of a store quickly.

          I agree. If I go to the grocery store, for example, I put on my mask as soon as I get out of my car, wear it while I’m in the store, and keep it on until I’m back in my car. It’s not that damn hard!

    I went back to volunteering at the cat shelter about a month ago, and up until today all of the other volunteers were wearing masks (except 1 and I stayed away from her.) Today though, me, my son, his wife, and 1 other person were the only ones wearing them. There is no excuse as far as I’m concerned for not wearing one around other people. If you can’t wear one, don’t go out amongst others. Period. We cannot win against the virus if we don’t use a zero tolerance policy. I’m not effin kidding. How many more have to die or suffer chronic health issues if they don’t die because of some assinine rationale that some have that they are an exception to the rule. OK my rant is over now.

      I stay away from them. Wearing a mask in public is mandated here, yet there are still those who choose not to wear them. 😡

    Another medical group sent a letter to the governor asking for a mask mandate today … I am sure that will not chance her mind. I have asthma and anxiety issues (like claustrophobia) when I wear one, but I still wear it for that short amount of time I am in the public – which is very little still. As the saying goes “mask it or casket!”
