SoCS — Czech, Please

192636CE-B127-4FCE-8578-443376529F8ASo I had an item that I wanted to sell so I listed it on Craigslist. Not more than 15 minutes after I posted the ad, I got an email from someone saying he was interested in buying my item and asking if he could pay me by cheque.

I responded to his email and said, yes, you can write a check. Then I asked if he was either English or Canadian.

He sent me back an email asking me why I wanted to know that. I wrote back and said, “I didn’t mean to pry or to offend you. I was just curious at the way you wrote ‘cheque’ instead of ‘check,’ which is how we usually spell it in America. I think that ‘cheque’ is the British spelling of the word.”

He wrote back and said, “I see. Well, I’m neither English nor Canadian. I am, in fact, Czech, and I recently moved here from the Czech Republic. But if it will make it any easier on you, I can pay cash, as in good old American dollars.”

“That’s okay,” I wrote back. “I’ll take a cheque.”

    We also say “Cheque” in Australia although apart from businesses I don’t think many people use them now. I haven’t written one in more than 15 years.

    Most people do online banking these days, well, so I’m wondering why he chose not to a BACS transfer. Hope all goes well for you.

    The answer to my ethnic background on the census, where only one response was allowed (whereas I am basically, really, four backgrounds equally). So, if there were a list of boxes, I would’ve checked Czech.

    Meanwhile, this is NOT a question one has to actually respond to for the beneficial and constitutionally-required census. You could leave that blank and ONLY answer how many people reside at the address.
