#writephoto/3TC — The Beginning or The End

170EAE13-38F3-4AED-B0E5-D1CCD192B525The past six months had been brutal. Carolyn lost her parents and her grandmother to the virus. She was laid off from her job when her employer closed its doors due to the pandemic. And she just got the results back from her own COVID-19 test and it was positive. Her life, she felt, had hit a metaphysical wall.

As she stared out at the glistening water, she thought about her options. One would be to slowly walk into the surf and literally drown her troubles. Having lost almost everything of meaning in her life, she felt there was nothing left to lose, and nothing left to live for.

On the other hand, she could turn around and give herself a clean break from the past and start her life anew. She was young and, aside from testing positive for the virus, she was healthy. It wasn’t necessarily a death sentence as it had been for her parents and grandmother.

Carolyn was at the crossroads between an end and a new beginning. She looked, once again toward the sea. Then back behind her toward the dry land. It was time for her to decide, and with her usual resolve, she made her choice. She chose her option. And she walked slowly in that direction.

The past few months have brought so many to that crossroads… and no end to the damage in sight.

Love the open ending. This virus has claimed so many, not just in death but emotional trauma too.
    Good write Fandango.

Well, that’s a cliffhanger! Hope she decided to start anew! We are finding out about more and more people we know that are positive. One has died. I lost my job because of it. The virus is real and the numbers we see everyday are real people. Suicide is never the answer, but I don’t live with a mental illness that goes with that. The best we can do is pray for everyone and wear our damn masks when in public! Unfortunately, this is the world we live in right now.

Yes, it is what it is, although with more effective leadership, it didn’t have to be this bad.

You are right about that! We are learning of more friends we have are positive for the virus or have been exposed with asymptomatic friends. For the first time, I was around people on Wednesday other than the grocery store or doctor office. My sister is here from Texas, niece in a softball tourny. Can you believe they still had it going on in our hot spot of Florida. We wore our masks. I hadn’t seen them in over 2 years so we took our chances. No hugs or anything, but was still in close vicinity. I hope we didn’t get it from anyone but I suppose we will know in 2 weeks. Ugh!

This was a very well done story. Overwhelming emotions can cause such damage. I do hope she walked away from the water and got the help she needed. This virus has taken too many lives.
