He came to D.C. to participate in the demonstrations, but while he was there, he took a walk to the Vietnam War Memorial, a wall of names carved into it. The Memorial was erected in honor of those brave soldiers who pledged their allegiance to their country and who served with distinction.
These men and women sacrificed their lives. He wondered, had he been called upon to serve, if he would have gone without any doubt about the mission or the sacrifice. He was saddened by the number of names carved into the wall, and while he was not someone who was apt to become overcome with emotion, he couldn’t help but to tear up when he came across the name of one of the boys from the neighborhood he grew up in.

Good job of blending together the prompts. I would love to make it to DC to see some of the history there. And the Vietnam war memorial would definitely be on my list to see.
