Leave Well Enough Alone

What is the deal with June 1st at WordPress? Is that the first day of the new fiscal year there? It was June 1st 2018 when WordPress called a halt to its Daily Post, prompting a number of us to start our own daily word prompts in order to fill the void WordPress left.

Now, according to a post that Li, over at Tao Talk published a few days ago, as of June 1st, WordPress will be “retiring our older WordPress.com editor and transitioning to the more recent (and more powerful) WordPress block editor.”

This is not good news for me. If you don’t already know it, I blog exclusively from my iPhone. Not from a desktop computer. Not from a laptop. Not even from a tablet like an iPad. Just from my iPhone. Have any of you tried using the block editor from a smartphone? It’s not a good user experience. There isn’t enough “real estate” on a relatively small smartphone screen to make it work. At least not for me. So I have continued to use the “classic” editor.98818DF8-5454-4C7F-82CE-C2F64AC6C394My initial reaction to this news that the “classic” editor is being “retired” was to just quit blogging, at least on WordPress. But Li was kind enough to link to this post from WordPress. The good news is that the WordPress link indicates that, “You also have the choice to switch to the Classic editor.”

I hope that is, indeed, the case and that you don’t have to jump through hoops to use the “classic” editor. Because I really don’t want to leave WordPress to go to another blog hosting site or to quit blogging altogether.

Why can’t those happiness engineers at WordPress just leave well enough alone? Jeez, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

I agree completely. So fed up with their continually changing things. I’ve done over 6,000 posts on WP and by far prefer the old editor.

Well, let’s hope we can still opt into using the “classic” editor as of June 1st.

The communication I got from WP is that they are retiring the classic editor.

But it does suggest that you can still opt into it. Fingers crossed, anyway. 🤞

I’m on the classic editor and like it, so hope they don’t retire that in the near future.

If they retire the classic editor, I’m cooked. I have tried the block and found it to be—well—a stumbling block.

Can we do the sheltering-in-place equivalent of taking to the streets? But first I’m gonna check with the HEs.

Guns (a form of taking to the streets we’ve seen recently) are the answer to everything, unless one is a disliked person — and therefore a terrorist or at least nasty or a fan of a “nanny state” and not American enough to be allowed to carry a gun (preferably with no safeguards or regulations). Also, voting is illegal unless you’re going to vote Republican. Okay… yes, I’m venting.

We certainly don’t want you to quit, Fandango.

I hope I won’t have to, but from a blogging perspective, it’s give me classic or give me death!

Yes. I blog from my phone too. And the end of the email I saw classic would be an option, and I think I selected that several times several months ago.

Me either, spoken from my inner child- I do not care for these upgrades that complicate things. Next they’ll be upping fees. Yahoo Mail I’ve had since day one is constantly changing and it’s the basic communication between me and my sisters, and one of them can’t handle the changes. So disappointing.

I use classic mostly and switch to block from time to time, only to get frustrated and switch back. 🙄

I tried it once on my iPhone and after a few hours of not being able to figure out how to use it, I gave up and went back to the classic editor. So they’d better keep it as an option.

Agreed. They don’t care about writers imo. They are trying to make blogging easier for people to post pictures and ads and links 😡

Geezz… I’m already lost in WP as it is! No idea why I can’t like certain blog entries, can’t ping back, I search peoples blog entries in the reader and they don’t appear… 🙂 But all of that is bearable cause the people are so cool. I’d miss interacting with you.

I have suspected that they would do this for some time and lately, I had noticed that when I log in there is information about the block editor on the dashboard page. I wondered why, as it has been around for a while. Obviously this is the reason.
I taught myself to use it some time ago but my sister hates it. I don’t see her staying on WP if she is forced to use it.
I thought WP wanted to make things easier for those of you who blog on phones so I am surprised that they have chosen to do this to their favourite customers.

Sometime I wonder what it is that drives the thinking at WordPress. But then I think maybe it’s me and I’m old and can’t (or don’t want to) embrace change.

I’m the same. I was happy with things as they were. However, it doesn’t seem like WordPress really wants to cater for everyone. In fact apart from businesses I’m not sure who they think they are here for.

They should, at minimum, keep the original version as an app for androids!

Okay, unless I misunderstood what I read, we’re to be given a choice. WP drones might be ‘retiring’ the classic editor (they tried this before if I recall), but it will still be an option for those of us who refuse to be dragged into the ‘new’ – allegedly exciting – world of ‘block editing’ (WTF is that?? I did editing for my entire adult working life in one form or another) and that phrase “block editing” only brings up images of old Peanuts (c) cartoon strips and Lucy calling someone or other a “block head”. Well WP could be labeled that way and it wouldn’t be wrong. I’m going to opt for the classic editor as soon as they’ll let me. I tried to change the setting today and couldn’t find it, so I suppose I’ll have to flail around and find the setting button on that irritating new format dipwad system change. I saw their ‘trailer’ (as in movie trailer) of the coming ‘attraction’ and only got a migraine for my trouble. F*ck em. They’ll be hounding me for my renewal fee about then too. Hmmm

It was hard at first, then I just got used to it. Changed to ‘blocks’ on my android phone too. But then I don’t blog all that much from my phone, mostly only editing an already written post and publishing it.

They must be really bored over there at WordPress. I’ve used them since 2013 and they keep changing things that don’t need to be fixed or changed. It’s really annoying, I feel your pain.

You must remember, then, when WordPress introduced its Beep Beep Boop “new and improved” posting experience in 2014. Everybody hated it. I am not opposed to change as long as it’s change for the better, and not just change for the sake of change.

I don’t like change! I do blog on my laptop, but don’t really want to learn a new way of blogging when I know this one so well. Fandango, if you do plan on vacating after the first please give us a heads up where you are headed, I would really miss your blog!

I’m same, I can’t use block editor, because like you, I only blog from my phone too. It’s my only source of internt.
But I also find it does more than I need.
Visually it is too busy for me too. I can’t cope with that visual element on top of not being able to use it on my phone.

It is true they are keeping classic editor. There will be somewhere to click for that option on the new editor.

But like we know when it comes to WordPress. Will they fail to keep their promise a year, or more down the line and get rid of classic editor? I be gone if they do.

Let’s hope it don’t come to it. I have still looked at blogging elsewhere alternatives, but nothing appeals to me or suitable and I wouldn’t go back to Blogger. So it would be the case of disappearing in thin air if it came to that.

I’m glad-ish I’m not the only one. I loathe the block editor, I’ve tried it and run away screaming. It’s really confusing and just… not practical? If I’m forced to use it, I may give it a try, but I also may quit using WordPress if there’s no alternative! I hope you ‘ll still blog somewhere, but it’s understandable if you don’t!

We’re in the same boat there! I just can’t stomach the new editor, so if they insist on keeping it… I’ll have to see what I can do and where I can go. :/
