I think one of the things which we MUST change in our culture is the veneration of our elders. You have so much to share. I think returning to a culture of story is part of that.

I agree, but I’m afraid society doesn’t.

What is is not what always will be. Things can change.

Wow, sobering thought. I hope it isn’t true. Like Joseph, I would like to return to the days when we revered our elders. Perhaps because I am an elder now, lol!

I know culturally this is true…but…I think when ‘seniors’ are more visible in communities through activities, volunteering, grandchildrens’ ball games, etc. and with pleasant, colorful countenance, that stereotype becomes faded itself. I’m not sure if I made myself clear here but you probably get my drift.

Yes I do. To know us is to love us, but to too many we are stereotypes.

Talking with my sister the other day, I asked her how her grandchildren are doing with the shutdown. Sadly, she commented that she doesn’t see them much now “because grandparents aren’t necessary any more.” i really hope the world isn’t moving to that, but it saddened me to hear her say it!

I do think seniors don’t hold the same place in our society that they used to.

My mom had a “thing” about women (like her) not expecting people (like her mother) to take care of the children. So, although my grandmother would’ve been happy to do so, my mom had me in part-time preschool (while she worked part time) until she could get me into first grade early and she could work full time. Then, when she was a grandmother (I didn’t even consider counting on her to babysit), she didn’t want to be called anything like grandmother/grandma. Attitudes like this, I think, get spread around even when the grandparents don’t subscribe to them.

🙂 Fandango, it is nice to see that your prompts have not faded into obscurity.

I still do a few prompts, although not as many as I used to.

Basically the minute you can no longer work, you are no longer considered important. I know since I had to stop working due to my health problems I feel like I have faded too. Sad but true.
