Song Lyric Sunday — Tequila Sunrise

There was never a doubt in my mind when I saw that Jim Adams has selected Burrito, Fajita, Mexican, and Tequila as his theme words for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday that I would choose “Tequila Sunrise” by The Eagles, one of my favorite bands.

The first single from Desperado, The Eagles’ second album, “Tequila Sunrise” was a 1973 song written by Don Henley and Glenn Frey, with Frey singing lead. Along with the song, “Desperado,” it was one of two songs they came up with during the first week that they started writing songs together.

A Tequila Sunrise is a cocktail made with tequila and orange juice with some grenadine poured on top to create the red and orange colors of a sunrise. The song, though, doesn’t actually refer to that cocktail, per se. It’s about a guy who has been drinking straight tequila until the sun comes up.

The line, “Take another shot of courage,” refers to how, if you drink tequila, it will give you courage to talk to women. The band members used to call tequila “instant courage.” Frey said, “We very much wanted to talk to the ladies, but we often didn’t have the nerve, so we’d drink a couple of shots and suddenly it was, ‘Howdy, ma’am.’”

Here are the lyrics to the song:

It’s another tequila sunrise
Starin’ slowly ‘cross the sky
Said goodbye
He was just a hired hand
Workin’ on the dreams he planned to try
The days go by

Ev’ry night when the sun goes down
Just another lonely boy in town
And she’s out runnin’ ’round

She wasn’t just another woman
And I couldn’t keep from comin’ on
It’s been so long
Oh and it’s a hollow feelin’
When it comes down to dealin’ friends
It never ends

Take another shot of courage
Wonder why the right words never come
You just get numb
It’s another tequila sunrise
This old world still looks the same
Another frame

I can’t say which Eagle’s song is my favorite because I had all their albums. This is right up there and I love this live version.

I’ve seen them in concert live (before Glenn Frey passed) four times and Don Henley twice in solo performances since then. They are great!

My hubby saw them too in the 70’s in their prime. He said it was a hell of a show.
