Song Lyric Sunday — Time on My Hands

For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday, Jim Adams is, once again, focusing on body parts. In this case, it’s “ankles,” “hands,” “feet,” “fingers,” “toes,” and “wrists.” I decided to go with “Too Much Time on My Hands” by Styx.

This Classic Rock song was written by Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw, who also sang lead on the track. “Too Much Time on My Hands” was the second single released from Styx’s 1981 triple-platinum album Paradise Theatre. The theme of the album was built around a concert hall rising to prominence and then crumbling. It was based on a real venue: the Paradise Theatre in Chicago. Shaw liked the album’s concept, but was having trouble writing songs that fit, which is why “Too Much Time On My Hands” doesn’t follow the album’s theme. The song reached number 9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

“Too Much Time on My Hands” is about a guy who spends his days at the local bar, blustering on about world events or whatever else pops into his head. He’s got nothing better to do, and aided by alcohol, he gets a little crazy as he sees his life slipping away.

Shaw explained that he drew inspiration for the song from a real bar in Niles, Michigan, where he was living. “It was the local watering hole. The drinks were good, and the drinks were cheap. And you’d always run into somebody you knew in there. That was the basis of the song.”

Here are the lyrics for “Too Much Time on My Hands.”

Sitting on this barstool talking like a damn fool
Got the twelve o’clock news blues
And I’ve given up hope for the afternoon soaps
And a bottle of cold brew
Is it any wonder I’m not crazy? Is it any wonder I’m sane at all
Well I’m so tired of losing – I got nothing to do and all day to do it
I go out cruisin’ but I’ve no place to go and all night to get there
Is it any wonder I’m not a criminal?
Is it any wonder I’m not in jail?
Is it any wonder I’ve got

Too much time on my hands?
It’s ticking away with my sanity
I’ve got too much time on my hands
It’s hard to believe such a calamity
I’ve got too much time on my hands
And it’s ticking away, ticking away from me
Too much time on my hands
(It’s t-t-t-t-ticking away)
Too much time on my hands
(And I don’t know what to do with myself)
Too much time on my hands

Too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands

Now, I’m a jet fuel genius – I can solve the world’s problems
Without even trying
I got dozens of friends and the fun never ends
That is, as long as I’m buying
Is it any wonder I’m not the president
Is it any wonder I’m null and void?
Is it any wonder I’ve got

Too much time on my hands?
It’s ticking away with my sanity
I’ve got too much time on my hands
It’s hard to believe such a calamity
I got too much time on my hands
And it’s ticking away, ticking away from me
Too much time on my hands
(T-t-t-t-ticking away)
Too much time on my hands
(And I don’t know what to do with myself)
Too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands
(T-t-t-t-ticking away)
Too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands
(Too much time on my hands)

This may be the reason that I am blogging, as I got Too Much Time on My Hands. I love the organ on this song and the video is pretty cool.

Aw. 😥 Again your thoughts and mine collided. Great minds and all that. And far too much time on our hands, yes?

Forgot about this song. It’s a good’n. I like the way they keep changing it up but keep that rhythm going.

I guess there were a few of us thinking along the same lines. Still, while the song is the same, the posts written around it are different and that makes it fun, right?

Yes, a number of us picked this same song but we talked about it in different ways, and you’re right, that’s what makes it fun!

Good song choice! Wish I had seen Styx in concert when I had the chance.
