Blogging Insights — To Niche or Not To Niche, That is the Question

Blogging insightsDr. Tanya, over at Salted Caramel wants to know:

Do you have a niche for your blog? If so tell us more about it.

My blog’s name is “This, That, and The Other.” That’s a very un-niche-like name and mine is a very un-niche-like blog.

Have you ever thought of niche-ing down and why?

No, I’ve never thought about niche blogging. I believe that a niche blogger must be either very knowledgeable (i.e., an expert) in whatever niche he or she chooses to write about, or very, very good at that niche. As I am a jack of all trades, master of none, I have no niche.

What are the topics you like to write about ?

I write about the shitshow that is American politics since the 2016 presidential election. I also write a lot of flash fiction leveraging prompt words or prompt pictures. And I write about what’s going on in my world and in the world around me.

If you chose just one as your niche, how much would you miss writing about the others?

I would not, could not choose just one niche.
I would not, could not no matter what the itch.
I would not, could not on my blog.
I would not, could not in the fog.
I would not, could not in the day.
I would not, could not in the hay.
I would not, could not in the dark.
I would not, could not at the park.
I would not, could not on my phone.
I would not, could not in my home.
I would not, could not on the go.
I would not, could not at the show.
I would not, could not in a boat.
I would not, could not with a goat.
I would not, could not in the rain.
I would not, could not on a train.
I would not, could not in my car.
I would not, could not at a bar.
I would not, could not up a tree.
So when it comes to niches, just let me be.

Lol! Love your poem. I confess, I would love to be considered in the “humor” niche but sometimes I don’t feel particularly up to it in the age of Trump.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Trump has sucked most of the humor out of our lives.

I think you have to be particularly dedicated to the subject to write a niche blog. It is certainly easier to write a this and that type of blog where you can write fact or fiction, opinion, poetry, do challenges or just post pictures.
I actually have one of each. My original blog which I still have is about dolls. I’m a collector so I am usually able to find enough material to post in it at least once a week and after nearly 7 years it seems to coast along quite nicely if I have to leave it for a week or so. The other one is about everything else and I started it because I wanted to write off-topic sometimes. That has been going for nearly as long..

I agree that it’s easier to write free-style that to focus on a relatively narrow niche and take a deep dive. I don’t have the dedication or expertise to a single area do that.

🙂 Sticking to a niche would send me absolutely insane.
