I Almost Forgot About This

18F6E43E-9769-4E54-AD14-8A43141AD1C1Simeon Levine, over at The Levine Lowdown, gifted me with the Sunshine Blogger Award a week ago, but I’ve been so busy with this move to a new house, that I’m just getting around to acknowledging and responding to his generous gift.

Mine is an award-free blog, but I do appreciate the recognition another blogger bestows upon me and my blog. And it’s my pleasure to answer 11 his questions. But I won’t be tagging 11 other bloggers nor will I be posing my own questions. That said, I invite anyone who cares to take a shot at answering Simeon’s questions to feel free to do so.

Here we go.

1. Why did you start you blog?

Because I feel like I have something to say and no one would listen to me when I talked.

2. What is your favorite part about blogging?

The interactions with other members of the blogging community.

3. What is one of your goals for 2020?

To acclimate to living in the suburbs after having spent the last three decades being an urbanite.

4. If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?

Don’t sweat the small stuff.

5. What is your favorite sport?

To watch: American football. To play: ping pong (table tennis) or pool (billiards).

6. If you could go back in the past to any year, which year would you go back to?

My philosophy is to never look back. Only to live in the present and look forward to the future. Thus, I would not want to go back to any year in my past.

7. What is one country that you would love to travel to?

I’ve always had a hankering to visit New Zealand.

8. What is one thing that not many people know about you?

I’m an open book, so there’s not much that people don’t know about me. Except, that is, who I really am, since I blog anonymously.

9. What has been the scariest moment of your life?

When my son had open heart surgery to repair a defective aorta valve.

10. When does bread become toast?

When it turns brown and becomes crispy. Duh!

11. What is your favorite song of all time?

This is tough because there are so many great songs. But if push comes to shove…oh forget it. Any song by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Chicago, Billy Joel, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Brown, Eric Clapton, Queen, Stevie Wonder, Pink Floyd, Elton John, and, well, I could go on and on, but you get the drift, right?

    It would be nice to go back to “pre” health nonsense. But how far would we need to go back to be sure were pre-anything? I reckon a lot of it is destined from the womb.

    That’s a major answer on #9! And it just now made me realize something about an occurrence in my life. I had a life-threatening experience almost two decades ago. I theorized why medical personnel looked at me confused. I had postulated it was because I’d thought I was having an allergic reaction to aspirin, while they said, if it were that, I’d already be dead. But now I think they were perplexed that I wasn’t afraid.

    I have two scary memories. One involved a son putting something into his nose that we couldn’t get out ourselves (which happened more than once with different items). A younger son remembers putting Cheerios into his own nose; says he’d just smash it and be fine. Little plastic [or, I’d imagine, wood as well] toys are an issue even for children who have reached the age of five (some children anyway).

    I’ve remembered a third scary time, and, if I keep on, there are more. They all involve my kids being injured. One in football. Once with a huge plastic tube building piece that a neighbor child threw. One time when a son riding a bike veered off the road and into a protruding, cut-off tree branch and had 21 stitches in his scalp. That accounts for the three middle boys. The youngest of five was known for a very hard head.*

    I was also scared the first time my oldest son fell and hit his head. Another mother in the emergency room said to “get used to it” (she wasn’t there for a simple goose egg, I think it was asthma or some such matter). I got a little more used to it with the four following him. But there are still surprising situations. The plastic tube hit above my fourth one’s eye. I’d say that was the scariest, to see blood all over his eye.

    * The youngest one got a fishing hook stuck through his ear when hanging around while his dad was fishing (which, fishing, their dad didn’t do often).

    Hm; another incident… when I finally realized how afraid of water my husband was. Our three middle children had gotten too far out in a current in Florida. I told him, and he hardly budged. I was holding our youngest (almost three years old), so I handed the little one to his dad and swam out on my own to drag three boys back into shore without getting drowned myself the way you hear lifeguards have to beware.

    That was scary, but the way I got through included laughing. I’m proficient in water, never a lifeguard.

    Oh, yeah. My oldest one also was in a motorcycle accident when he was twenty or so. No broken bones.

    I, too, was nominated by the great Simeon-down-under, and have it on my to-do list. I’m all about the sunshine so I intend to get it done. In the meantime, Tom got questions:

    1. Why do you blog anonymously?

    2. Who is your favorite football team?

    3. Why not The Boss?

    1. My wife and I have lived rural and suburban but never urban. We prefer suburban with a touch of rural, where I can walk into my front yard and see neighbors, and walk into my backyard and see greenbelt.

    2. Your answer to #6 was inspiring. When I am asked what period of time I would most want to live in I always say this one, or the one immediately after.

      1. Why do you blog anonymously?
      My identity has been “stolen” twice, so I figured blogging anonymously and I thought blogging anonymously might minimize the chance that it would happen a third time.

      2. Who is your favorite football team?
      I’m partial to the New England Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers.

      3. Why not The Boss?
      Springsteen definitely should have been on the list, along with Dylan, Hendrix, and others, but I was running out of steam.

        I recently bought a tee, for someone, with a map of Missouri and Kansas… a star for Kansas City (on the MO side, where the Chiefs are based) and the words within the Missouri portion saying “THE ENTIRE USA” — another sort of version of the shirt Mahomes wore with “The Great State of Kansas” imposed within the shape of Missouri. You know who they’re quoting.

            My first interest in professional football, other than peripherally [even if in person once], was due to the 49ers — when I lived in the computer valley out there. I saw Jerry Rice playing (just on television), and I said, “He looks like a dancer!” Turned out he had taken dance lessons as a youngster. (He was probably before your time.) So then I had a little bit of interest in the Chiefs when Joe Montana played for them.

              Oh, right. I wasn’t a big San Francisco fan back in the Jerry Rice era. Back then I was a Redskins fan and Rice was always a formidable threat against any other team’s defensive secondary.

          I would liked to have seen a Patriots/49ers Super Bowl, but it was not in the cards this year.
