Song Lyric Sunday — Legs

Jim Adams continues with his body parts obsession for this week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme. His focus this time is on arms, elbows, knees, and legs. Unable to help myself, I chose ZZ Top’s “Legs.”

“Legs,” written by ZZ Top band members Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, andFrank Beard, appeared on the band’s1983 albumEliminator. It was released as a single in 1984 and reached number 8 on theBillboard Hot 100 in the U. S.

According to Gibbons, he got the inspiration for this song when he was driving in Los Angeles and there was this unusual downpour. “And there was a real pretty girl on the side of the road,” he said. “I passed her, and then I thought, ‘Well, I’d better pull over’ or at least turn around and offer her a ride, and by the time I got back she was gone. Her legs were the first thing I noticed. Then I noticed that she had a Brooke Shields hairdo that was in danger of falling. She was not going to get wet. She had legs and she knew how to use them.”

9105A8BD-CC34-4776-A4BC-8CCAF6B66575In “Legs,” the main character is a girl. The music video of the song leverages the same three “Eliminator Girls” — Wendy Frazier, Kymberly Herrin, and Daniele Arnaud — who were featured in several other ZZ Top music videos. But in this case, instead of sweeping a guy off in the Eliminator (a chopped, cherry red 1933 Ford coupe owned by Gibbons), the trio rescues a girl who desperately needs some confidence. They give her a makeover and teach her how to handle guys to get what she wants.

There was a lot of criticism of the song at the time from feminist groups who complained that it objectified women. Listening to the lyrics, I think they had a good point.

Here are the lyrics to “Legs.”

She’s got legs, she knows how to use them
She never begs, she knows how to choose them
She’s holdin’ leg wonderin’ how to feel them
Would you get behind them if you could only find them?
She’s my baby, she’s my baby
Yeah, it’s alright

She’s got hair down to her fanny
She’s kinda jet set, try undo her panties
Every time she’s dancin’ she knows what to do
Everybody wants to see if she can use it
She’s so fine, she’s all mine
Girl, you got it right

She’s got legs, she knows how to use them
She never begs, she knows how to choose them
She’s got a dime all of the time
Stays out at night movin’ through time
Oh, I want her, said, I got to have her
The girl is alright, she’s alright (oh)

Good one Fandango. You have got to love the way they do that guitar swing and the sexy legs don’t hurt the video all that much.

I was wondering who was going to put this on! I have a ZZ album somewhere. My first thought was a song my husband used to sing with his army buddies “I love to go swimming with bow legged women” but, uh, no.😀. Some of those songs stick with you and I used to pop out with them when the kids were little until I realized the lyrics. Usually an army song. I doubt they do much of that singing anymore.
