The Monday Peeve — Trash Talk

Paula Light has a new prompt. She calls it “The Monday Peeve” (aka, “TMP”), and the idea, Paula says, is to give us an opportunity to vent, to blow off a little steam at the beginning of the week.

Alrighty then. I’m going to vent/blow off some steam by doing some trash talk. I’m an urban dweller and one of the prices we urban dwellers pay for the convenience of living in the middle of all the action is the high concentration of other human beings living in close proximity and the volume of trash they generate.

Most people put their trash in proper receptacles, like trash bins. But there are some people who seem to just drop their trash, well, wherever. Yesterday, while walking the our dog, we came across this:D99FE793-4375-445D-843D-B64CDC0366A1I mean what the hell, people? The city provides large trash receptacles every three or four blocks. Are you too damn lazy to carry your trash to one of them? Or to take your garbage home with you and put it in your own trash bin? Instead you just drop it anywhere on the sidewalk? WTF is wrong with you?

If I ever see anyone just drop their trash in the street, I’m going to pick it and run up to them and dump it on their heads.

Okay. I feel much better now. Thank you, Paula.

I feel the same about dog mess and have been known to offer a bag to someone who might otherwise walk on. We clear up after Maggie and there are bins in several places. We have seen piles of it in front of the bin or a little way away, but the cheekiest was a bag of the stuff BY the bin rather than in it. I guess the owner must have had short arms.

I also feel that way about people who don’t pick up after their dogs. I always have spare bags that I offer to those who otherwise walk away without picking it up.

I read where they intended to pass a law that if you didn’t have the means to clear up after your dog, you would be fined. Apparently you were expected to carry at least 2 poo bags. We tend to carry two full pockets worth!

I am so with this. Just down the road from me there is a bus stop that always has litter, or nitril gloves dropped there and there is literally a bin next to the bus shelter.

Dog crap I agree is every pet owners responsibility to clear up. But it’s the litter that seems to be an issue where I live.

I just don’t understand how people can be such slobs and so inconsiderate.

I’m same. I just don’t get it. At the bus stop where I see the same pile of rubbish nearly each week after other is cleared by a council worker, it’s there again, it only takes a few steps to just walk to the bin.

people just don’t care, it seems. Was walking the kids today while bug bombing the house..I always have a roll of bags in my pockets cause…well, ya never know. A guy in front of us, just going into the dog park let his dog go, then walked away. I hollared Hey dude! here’s a bag………..he turned and said “if it bothers ya, YOU pick it up, (expletive deleted). So I did, and deposited it in his front seat. Took my babies and went to the park across town.

People can be so gross. How hard is it to walk 2 feet and use the trashcan

That kind of shit pissed me off too. It’s unsanitary, disgusting to look at if a little kid picks it up and accidentally cuts themselves… Really? Jackasses plain an simple!
For crying out loud, my roommate’s car is a traveling landfill, and if lucky, gets thrown in the garbage eventually.

Ooh, I also get annoyed with this as well. There was once I saw someone who dropped the trash onto the ground…and the bin is literally 5 steps from that person. Sometimes, I wonder what is going on their minds as they drop the trash

I feel ya. Was lined up to pay at Whole Foods last night and the lady in front of me was squeezing in a piece of her plastic trash in the shelf near the counters. She saw me looking at her and she held on to her trash instead. For a short time. When she went on to pay I noticed she left her trash on the nearby magazine rack. Tsk. I mean, come on!!

Is this typical of all urban areas, would you say, or is it just that SanFran attracts people who don’t care? I’ve noticed the latter, here. Where I am, it’s quite rural, but we all seem to want the place to look good.

We do have a problem with fly-tipping, I’m not sure if you guys call it something different. Where a guy will leave his old refrigerator by the side of the road rather than taking it to the dump. That’s getting worse, we even see bags of household trash just dumped by the side of a field. Coincidentally, I’m sure, local governments have cut back public access to dumps as they try to save on manpower costs.

I think it’s pretty much most major cities in the U.S., but it has gotten worse in San Francisco since I first moved here. And yes, we have people putting old appliances and mattresses out on the street, too.

It makes me mad that people are so lazy too. On the subject of rubbish, I also get really angry at people who leave bags of stuff at our Op Shop and when we open them up it is rubbish, broken toys, torn, stained and dirty clothes, damp or smelly from being in some shed and sometimes even with poo on them. It is disgusting. What makes them think anyone would buy that crap? So we volunteers have to handle it and the shop has to pay for rubbish removal. I know that many charity shops have the same problem.

I have heard of charity shops have this problem. It’s disgusting that people do this. It just says a lot about that person.

I have a solution. Anytime you throw trash anywhere except a proper bin etc, it comes back, sticks on you permanently.

TMP… I like that idea. I may have to join in one week. Good post on the trash people leave behind, infuriating!
