One-Liner Wednesday — Take Heed Republicans

“Not to punish evil is equivalent to authorizing it.”

Leonardo da Vinci

I actually saw this quote in a post by Paula B, at The Temenos Journey, titled “The Evil of Standing By And Doing Nothing.” It’s an excellent post and well worth the read.

Leonardo da Vinci was the epitome of a renaissance man: an inventor, artist, painter, sculptor, architect, scientist, mathematician, engineer, botanist, geologist, astronomer, and paleontologist.

His centuries-old sentiment was remarkably prescient for today’s day and age. And as for those Republicans in Congress and in Donald Trump’s administration who do and say nothing as they watch Trump fiddle (tweet) while the country and the world burns, they are not only enabling his evil, they are authorizing it.

It is necessary and appropriate to impeach Donald Trump now.

Written for today’s One-Liner Wednesday prompt from Linda G. Hill.

    Very relevant to today’s environment.

That’s one of the reasons I am turned off organised politics. Some guy had basically behaved like a prick, and someone else has to come out and defend the indefensible, because the two happen to belong to the same “team”. What nonsense!

I suspect with Republicans, there is every chance they will let Trump get away with murder right now, because they think he’ll deliver them some job security next year.

They already are letting him get away with murder. He’s killing our American democracy.

I used to think it would take the Democrats’ focus off winning in 2020 (not just beating PABUS but taking down ballot seats too), but now I see that it should happen. He can’t go unpunished for all this. Week after week he just stomps over the laws. He simply doesn’t believe any rules should apply to himself and his family. Must be stopped.

Not that impeachment will stop him. It will fail. But at least there will be a record for history that the lawmakers didn’t shrug at all this.

I don’t know. If the hearings are public, maybe enough will come out about his high crimes and misdemeanors that people can no longer ignore them.

I totally agree. I can’t understand what Pelosi is waiting for.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about all the people that just brush aside the goings on from the current President, and am coming to the conclusion that the refusal to see evil for what it is, is equally to blame.

We have become numb to all of the ways he flouts our laws.

We need to stop being numb and get the blood circulating again.

YES. It’s impossible to ignore the flood of horrible behavior being passed off as presidential. Even that can’t distract from the increasing knowledge about his illegal behavior. This is madness.

I think if we could, we would. All we can do it bring charges. We can’t impeach him and if we could, what would it mean? What would it prove? There’s a really good piece from Franzen in the New Yorker about how basically, we can’t stop the world from ending at this point. In the 30 years they’ve seen this coming, we’ve accomplished almost nothing.

I am waiting to see what happens now that Congress has returned from recess. I think many members have gotten an earful from constituents over the break.

It’s so hard to know the wisest way to deal with this situation. Will impeachment by the House that dies in the Senate give trump ammunition that will strengthen what seems to be his increasingly weakening position? But how can Congress fail to take a strong stand against his blatant lawlessness?
And what about the 2018 Dems who won in Republican-leaning districts? Nancy Pelosi is a smart cookie who doesn’t want to lose the House. So perhaps these vulnerable Democrats will feel sufficiently comfortable now that their constituents will support the move—or they will bravely say they have to do the right thing regardless of the consequences, as Katie Porter has said.
I am very glad I’m not Nancy Pelosi.

I just hope everyone is equally eager to work for and ensure not only that whoever the Dems nominate gets a resounding victory—even if he/she is not the perfect candidate (who doesn’t exist)—but also that the Dems hold the House and win the Senate. It’s all hands on deck to defend our democracy.

Yep. Nancy and Katie are both smart cookies.

Very well said. It is a thorny issue and I just hope you’re right that the Dems can hold the House and take back the Senate and the White House. I also hope that, if Bernie doesn’t get the nomination, he won’t run as an independent and that his “Bernie or Bust” supporters will realize that any Democrat is better than Trump.

      • Marleen September 12, 2019 / 12:23 am

Bernie won’t run independently. Any Democrat IS better than Trump, and he knows it. There are always some who can’t get over something; always… like Hillary people who couldn’t convince themselves Barack was okay (I think they wanted a Republican who was female). Anyway, our democracy can’t afford to let Donald keep it. What a horror show.

That quote is straight to the point of what is going on today. And the days seem to get longer instead of shorter headed towards 2020… I just pray the democrats win!

“The Evil of Standing By And Doing Nothing” reminds me of the quote attributed to Dante, “The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis.”
