Is it Really Ellen?

921AC8B1-6338-4376-A746-2681F08553FFProbably not.

I saw this in my spam folder tonight.FA4E68F7-0C75-4F6F-AD97-72C0EB27B797My guess is that it appeared in my spam folder because it is, in fact, spam. I mean why would THE Ellen DeGeneres send me, completely out of the blue, a comment on this post that I wrote a month and a half ago and write, “Good story to hear”?

Definitely sounds like spam to me. Still, I was secretly tempted to believe that the actual Ellen DeGeneres found that post, enjoyed it, and took the time to comment on it. I was even tempted to like her comment and respond to it.

When I told my wife that Ellen DeGeneres commented on one of my posts, she laughed. “Yeah, you wish,” she said. “Maybe she was so impressed with your post that she’ll invite you to appear on her TV show.”

“You think so?” I asked, at which point she gave me a quizzical look.

“No!” she said. “What Fantasyland are you living in, anyway? It’s definitely spam.”

So I hit “Delete Permanently.”

Still, though, I wonder….

That comment made my day 😀 And gave me hope! I never check spam folder; maybe poor Benedict Cumberbatch wrote already dozens of messages..?

I’ve gotten comments on old posts from Entertainment Tonight, USA Today, any number of newspaper and TV writers (okay, they do know Garry, but the others don’t). A couple of authors (yes, I did write reviews of their books and it’s probably obvious i’m a fan — but these can and do come in not necessarily when the post goes up but often weeks or months later. So check and see if it looks like a real email address. Usually these people — famous people and corporate groups — don’t really expect you to answer them. They are just intending to give you a pat on the back. Which is nice. I save them in folders in email.

Some of the authors have become online friends. Authors REALLY like to talk about their writing!

Welll… If it WAS Ellen, she doesn’t know how to behave on WordPress! As of an earlier check of the web address, the account is “archived or suspended” due to violations of WP’s TOS.

Scammers are everywhere… I have even run across them in Words With Friends 2, we chat in games and then they want to get to know me… next thing they are asking for a $200 gift card. Ridiculous!
