S is for Sycophant

F837D866-F5E1-4652-B069-C8AFACC30DACI’ve known the meaning of the word sycophant for a long time, but to be honest, up until about three years ago, I don’t think I used it very often, if at all. Now, in the Trump era, it’s a part of my everyday vocabulary.

As I’m sure you know, a sycophant is a person who tries to win favor from wealthy or influential people by flattering them; who praises people in authority in a way that is not sincere, usually in order to get some advantage. Like, you know, the “personalities” on Fox News.

The political arena has always been populated by people who lust after access to power. But Donald Trump, hardly the first politician to attract self-serving followers, seems to attract more of these ass-kissing, butt-licking, self-promoters than most.9934DCA1-D3AD-48F6-8C18-E2EA9263DFC9But what amazes me more than those who flock to Trump like flies to shit, are the Republican members of Congress who see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil when it comes to Donald Trump.

Trump is their man, and they’re all harmoniously singing Tammy Wynette’s 1968 classic “Stand By Your Man.” It’s the GOP theme song, and nothing, it seems, can dissuade either Trump’s base or the Republicans in Congress from standing by their lying, corrupt con artist of a man, no matter what crazy shit he says or does.

It’s inexplicable to me how these GOP sycophants continue to stand by Trump at the expense of standing by — and for — their country.

A perfect picture to go with your post. Looks like they all are deaf, blind and mute!

I actually don’t think he attracts more. I think he’s more blatantly disgusting, and that it is stunning to see this doesn’t repel more people than it actually does… or more of the time or in more visible ways (and that the public charade carries on, with followers following as ever).

So, Don McGahn refused to obey an unlawful/unethical instruction. Good. But should he have reported the mal-instruction or order to someone (or a bureau)?

Or directly made a public statement?

I don’t know the answer to that (and other questions like it).

Enough is observable, though, that the population falling [and I use that word with more than one meaning] all over Trump have made themselves clear as either hypocrites (or worse) or ignoramuses (often willingly ignorant, which is dishonest or in the category of liars). I see corruption throughout. I used to vote Republican (not always, but usually); I now see that I was unknowingly enabling the destruction of my country. (Yes, I find this deeply lamentable.) It’s possible this would have been the case anyway, as power tends to involve corruption (but especially if it’s incorporation is unquestioned or mind-numbingly seen as the best). Yet, what has been dominant for decades is so-called conservatism… and it’s gone to seed. (Even Democrats tended rightward, with the exception of a couple distracting topics along with a few subject areas that are important but get deliriously downplayed or combatted.)

There comes a time for people who have thought or said [because sometimes it’s just about sitting in a pew and looking like something to others] they supported a party or side for moral (and maybe patriotic) reasons to wake up. (I know some people are tiring of the language of being woke, but religious people still ought to take note of what the sleeper waking means — you do no favor for larger moral causes by backing this horrible man.)

Some day they should have to hang their heads in shame while they publicly announce how ignorant they are of what this country is supposed to be made of!
