One-Liner Wednesday

“Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt.”

31st President of the United States Herbert Hoover

The U.S. national debt stood at $21.974 trillion at the end of 2018, more than $2 trillion higher than when President Donald Trump took office.

I feel sorry for the young because not only will they be inheriting a staggering national debt, they will be inheriting a dying planet, thanks to Trump and the Republican climate change deniers in Congress.

That is mind-boggling – how on earth can trillions of dollars of debt stack up? Who is it owed to?

It’s like when you use a credit card to pay for things but don’t have enough cash to pay off the balance at the end of each month. It’s essentially spending more money than you take in. So when the Republicans and the President give a huge tax cut to the wealthy and to big corporations, but then spend more money on the military, it increases the debt. And as a result, the people suffer because the country has to cut back on vital services in order to try to address the debt…services like health care, education, etc.

So do they physically owe money to a bank or financial organization or other nations? Or is it more a theoretical debt that causes inflation and reduces the value of the dollar?

Yes. The national debt is the total amount of money that a country’s government has borrowed, by various means, and owes to its creditors. The government has to make up the difference by borrowing even more money, and servicing that debt means that the government has to pay interest on the money it borrows, which does affect interest rates and the value of the dollar. It also stymies investments and often results in lower relative wages. Plus it puts entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare at risk if the federal debt continues to grow.

It’s hard to get your head round if you know what I mean. How a country with with so much can be in so much debt.

I find it hard to fathom the full consequences, because half of the world don’t have what we in the western world consider basic necessities. When I was in out in Africa people did not have plumbed in bathrooms, or washing machines … so many things that we have that they have never even seen…but such happy vibrant friendly warm people.

The major concerns were the desert expanding, HIV/Aids, maternal health and making sure people had the chance to be educated.

Paul Ryan (for the Republicans) talked about cutting Social Security and things like that, immediately after passing the tax cut to mainly benefit very rich people.

And now Trump is singing that same song.

Yeah, when he said he wouldn’t cut things like that.

How the Pentagon Blew 700 Billion Dollars (w/ Matt Taibbi)

“… George W Bush told his biographer in 1999 … that if he became President he was going to have a war with Iraq in order to get re-elected. ”

We’re in the same kind of preliminary buildup to war right now. Even if some people imagine that Donald Trump is a stupid president rather than a dangerous or criminal one (which I disagree with as I see that he is dangerous and criminal), in any case, the people around him have been on for Republican presidents for a while… including the convicted Elliott Abrams.
